Meredith College students and faculty will be participating in the 24-hour opening celebration for the Museum of Natural Sciences’ new Nature Research Center (NRC).
The opening will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 20 and continue through Saturday, April 21. More than 50,000 visitors are expected during the opening event.
The centerpiece of the Nature Research Center will be the SECU Daily Planet, a three-story multimedia space that will be the site of live programming on breaking science news. At regular intervals during the day, scientists will present to NRC visitors using the cutting edge technology and media of the Daily Planet and its 40×40-foot, high-definition screen.
During the 24-hour opening, Meredith students and faculty will be among the researchers presenting in the Daily Planet.
Students in the Meredith Tropical Ecosystems 2011 Study Abroad program and faculty members Francie Cuffney, Erin Lindquist and Marcelo Ardón will be presenting research findings from their projects in Costa Rica. The Meredith College session will be held at 1:30 a.m.
Nine Meredith students participated in the 2011 Tropical Ecosystems Study Abroad program May 14-June 2, 2011.
While in Costa Rica, they completed an interdisciplinary field biology course with a focus on tropical ecosystems, natural history and conservation. Sites included La Selva Biological Station, one of the premier facilities for rainforest research in the world, the Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve, where students learned about biological diversity in intertidal and reef marine habitats, and San Luis Biological Station, where students completed their independent research project.
