The 12th annual session of the Meredith LeaderShape® Institute was held May 8-13 at Fort Caswell on Oak Island, N.C. Thirty-six students completed the leadership development program, facilitated by LeaderShape Lead Facilitators Deb Hackney and Laura McMaster, as well as Meredith faculty Stephanie Little and staff Brandon Stokes and Grace Sugg, ’07. Including this year’s participants, 437 Meredith students have graduated from the LeaderShape Institute.
Again this year, the institute had a significant impact on all involved.
“Since coming to Meredith in July of 2010, I have seen a number of students grow and develop into mature young women,” said Brandon Stokes, Meredith Fund Program Coordinator and 2012 LeaderShape Cluster Facilitator. “However, it wasn’t until I attended the LeaderShape Institute as a cluster facilitator just a few weeks ago that I realized LeaderShape was primarily responsible for the maturation of the majority of the students with which I had come into contact. I saw shy students become confident women, not-so-open minds become open, strangers become friends, and even I discovered facilitation skills that I did not realize I possessed. Because of these experiences, I can confidently say that LeaderShape is an integral part of the Meredith curriculum that helps shape our young women into leaders with integrity.”
The LeaderShape Institute is the flagship program of the not-for-profit organization, LeaderShape®, Inc. The program is an intensive, energizing, and unique six-day educational experience designed to develop young adults to “lead with integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible.” The Meredith College campus-based session of the LeaderShape Institute strives to bring together Meredith student leaders and aspiring leaders from diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds.
All participants leave the institute with a LeaderShape Vision, a plan of action for the participants to implement back in their organizations, communities, or workplaces. Meredith’s annual LeaderShape Vision Showcase, where 2012 participants will share their visions with the campus community, will take place September 27-28 in Kresge Auditorium. All are invited to visit and be inspired by the leaders among us.
