Son of Man: in the Gospels, in History & in Film, Mary Frances Preston Lecture in Biblical Studies

Date: Thursday, November 14, 2013
Time: 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Location: Jones Chapel

Theologian W. Barnes Tatum will present the Mary Frances Preston Lecture in Biblical Studies at Meredith College on November 14, 2013, 5:30 p.m. in Jones Chapel. The lecture topic is Jesus as “Son of Man”: in the Gospels, in History, and in Film.

This lecture focuses on the gospel-based phrase “son of man” which has often puzzled historical scholars, and which has been chosen as the title for the recent Jesus movie, Son of Man (2006). Produced in South Africa and directed by Mark Dornford-May, this film imaginatively retells the Jesus story as though that story were occurring in Africa late in the twentieth century.

Film Showing and Discussion: In addition to the lecture, Meredith will host a showing of the film, Son of Man on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m., with a discussion following at 3:30 p.m. in Jones Chapel.
The reflection/discussion will be led by Tatum and Meredith Professor of Religious & Ethical Studies Margarita Suárez.
