Business Administration Curriculum
Candidates for the Bachelor of Science degree in business administration must take 42 hours in a prescribed core and an additional 12 hours of electives in accounting, business or economics.

Many students who major in business administration complete a minor to prepare for a
specific career field."

The core consists of the following courses: ACC 220, 221; BUS 240, 260, 310, 340, 343, 348, 370, 495; ECO 100,101; and MAT 245 (or equivalent).

Business Administration Courses:

BUS 240  PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 3 hours
Not open to freshmen.
An introduction to the theory and application of management principles, skills and functions in the achievement of organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

BUS 260 PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING 3 hours
Not open to freshmen.
An introduction to the principles, institutions, and techniques associated with the distribution of goods and services from the producer to the consumer.

BUS 310  INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS 3 hours
Prerequisites: BUS 240, BUS 260, and ECO 100.
Semester Offered: Fall
A study of the policies, institutions, and practices of international business and trade, with emphasis on the global integration of the United States' economy; international commercial and financial practices; international marketing and management techniques; differences in the cultural environment and customary business methods; and the role of multinational corporations.

BUS 340  BUSINESS LAW AND ETHICS 3 hours
Semester Offered: Fall and Spring
Not open to freshmen.
An examination of the legal and regulatory environment of business, including ethics and the place of law in society.

BUS 343  OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT 3 hours
Prerequisites: ACC 220, BUS 240, ECO 101, MAT 245.
Not open to freshmen.
An introductory course that examines the management of operating systems in both goods manufacturing and service producing industries.  Topics included are trade-off analysis, process analysis, workplace methods, production and inventory control systems, capacity planning, operations strategies, technology-driven information systems, information technology management, and decision support systems.  This course makes extensive use of case studies in operations management.

BUS 348  ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 240.
An analysis of individual and work group characteristics and those organizational factors which influence individual behavior within the organizational setting. The concepts studied include individual differences, small group dynamics, job and system design, leadership, motivation, and communication.

BUS 350  HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 240.
An examination of the principles, practices, and underlying theories of human resource management in relation to employee selection, training, motivation, and remuneration; interpersonal and group relationships; manpower planning.

BUS 352  TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 240
A study of the principles of training and development, training needs, assessment, training solutions to organizational problems, skill training, different training options, and ways of integrating new behavior and attitudes into the organizational system.

BUS 361 CONSUMER BEHAVIOR 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 260
Semester Offered: Fall
A study of the impact of such factors as personality, motivation, perception, learning, attitudes, cultural and social influences, and life-style changes on buying behavior. A review of sociological, psychological, and economic models of behavior will be included.

BUS 365 MARKETING RESEARCH 3 hours
Prerequisites: BUS 260 and MAT 245 or equivalent.
Offered Fall, every year
An examination and application of the process of planning a research project, gathering and analyzing secondary and primary data, and reporting (in writing and orally) the results for decision-making purposes. Applicable to those interested in social and behavioral sciences as well as business.

BUS 369 INTERNATIONAL MARKETING 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 260.
An examination of the economic, political, legal, and social constraints on marketing abroad and an analysis of the management and operational strategies of firms engaged in international marketing. Special emphasis is on differences between start-up operations and established multinational firms.

BUS 370  CORPORATE FINANCE 3 hours
Prerequisites: ACC 221, ECO 101, and MAT 245.
A study of the principles of optimal financial policy in the acquisition and management of funds by the profit maximizing firm; the application of theory to financial decisions involving cash flows, capital structure, and capital budgeting.

BUS 452  COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 350.
A study of the principles of compensation and benefits, job analysis and job evaluation, market surveys and their effects on pay structure, performance pay and incentives, benefits, services and the comparable worth issue.

BUS 458  EMPLOYEE RELATIONS MANAGEMENT 3 hours
A study of the principles of recruiting, selection, and retention of employees and the laws that pertain to them in the workplace, including the employer-employee relationship, discrimination, affirmative action, and government regulation.

BUS 466 SALES MANAGEMENT 3 hours
Prerequisites: BUS 260.
An analysis of professional selling practices with emphasis on the selling process and sales management. It will include the foundations of selling, the selling process, the difference in selling to organizational customers and to the ultimate consumer, and the management of the sales function. Students will be required to make several presentations.

BUS 467 ADVERTISING AND SALES PROMOTION 3 hours
Prerequisites: BUS 260.
An examination of the creative process, from strategy to execution, of advertising and promotional materials. Students will be required to develop the strategies, media plans, and draft executions of advertising and promotion materials.

BUS 468 MARKETING MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING 3 hours
Prerequisites: BUS 240 and 260.
A study of the management and planning required for the development of marketing plans for products and services; a disciplined analysis of the needs, wants, perceptions, and preferences of markets as the basis for setting objectives and developing the plans to accomplish them. Students will be required to develop and present marketing plans for organizations.

BUS 472  INTERMEDIATE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 370.
Offered Spring, every year
An in-depth study of the applications of theory to financial decisions involving optimal capital structure, capital budgeting criteria, and long- and short-term financing.

BUS 474  INVESTMENT ANALYSIS AND PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT 3 hours
Prerequisite: BUS 370.
Offered Fall, every year
A study of the theory and practice of portfolio management; analysis of securities; risk evaluation; alternative investment opportunities; and optimizing behavior of the individual investor.

BUS 480  BUSINESS INTERNSHIP 3 hours
Limited to senior majors. Can be taken only once. Pass-fail grading.  Credit will not be given for both BUS 480 and 481.
Supervised experience in business or governmental institutions where work is related to student interest and concentration.

BUS 481  HRM INTERNSHIP 3 hours
Limited to seniors minoring in Human Resource Management.  Credit will not be given for both BUS 480 and 481.  Pass-fail grading.
Supervised experience in business or governmental institutions where work is related to student interest and concentration in human resource management.

BUS 495  BUSINESS POLICY 3 hours
Prerequisites: BUS 240, 260, 370, 343
An in-depth study of managerial policy formulation, strategies and problems, including the influence of economic, social, and governmental factors. Required for all concentrations within the Business Administration Major and the International Business Major.

BUS 499  RESEARCH IN BUSINESS 1 to 3 hours
An in-depth endeavor that complements and enhances classroom learning.  It is an active participation by students and faculty in the creation, discovery, and examination of knowledge through various methods of inquiry and analysis within the various disciplines of business.   It represents a study or investigation conducted by an undergraduate that makes an intellectual contribution to business.  Junior or senior standing only.  May be repeated for credit for a maximum of six credit hours.
