The Cooperative Mentored Research Program began as a result of the mentoring relationship between Meredith Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Erin Lindquist and Susan Smith, a Duke postdoctoral research associate whom Lindquist was mentoring. The program allowed the Duke postdocs to gain experience as mentors and teachers and gave Meredith students an opportunity to conduct research at a large institution to prepare them for research and professional pursuits after graduation.
With a generous grant from the Jessie Ball DuPont Fund, the program expanded. Students are able to conduct at one of the sponsoring institutions in the Triangle including Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Lindquist coordinates the current program at Meredith.
