BIOLOGY 311
TEXTBOOK: Histology by Gartner and Hiatt and Atlas of Histology by Eroschenko.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The microanatomy of mammalian tissues and organs at both the light and electron microscope level are surveyed. Histology by its nature is highly visual, therefore, lecture and laboratory work will be integrated into a unified format. Students are introduced to the basics of microscopy and microtechnique, and are responsible for tissue and organ recognition and critical interpretation. Students are given a comprehensive set of prepared slides for detailed study.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students in this course will demonstrate understanding of:
- Both light and electron microscopy and microtechniques.
- Basic cell structure and function.
- The various types of tissues and be able to identify them by type and subtype.
- Of how the types of tissues are arranged to produce organs.
- Microanatomy of organs (organology) and be able to identify them under the microscope.
- Normal tissues and organs as a doorway to understanding abnormal conditions (pathology).
