BIOLOGY 142 GENERAL BIOLOGY II LAB

TEXTBOOK: Lab Manual for Biology 142

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A selection of laboratory exercises designed to illustrate the basic principles presented in BIO 102, including the study of representative organisms of the groups studied in class. Dissection of preserved animals is required.

PREREQUISITES: BIO 101 and BIO 141

COREQUISITE: BIO 102

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students of BIO 142 will be able to:

1. use the international system of weights and measures

2. conduct, analyze, and present results of biological observations and experiments

3. identify components and properly use stereoscopic and compound microscopes

4. describe properties and important ecological functions of prokaryote organisms

5. identify cellular structures, locomotory devices, nutritional modes, and life cycles of selected algae and protozoans

6. apply the scheme of alternation of generations to representative phyla of plants

7. identify and explain anatomical adaptations for terrestrial life and reproduction in the main evolutionary lineages of plants

8. identify and explain the function of anatomical and reproductive structures of selected fungi and fungal symbioses

9. identify a representative selection of invertebrate animals to phylum or class level

10. identify and explain the physiological and ecological purpose of anatomical structures observed by dissection of preserved animals

11. explore behavioral responses of invertebrates to various stimuli.
