BIOLOGY 102 GENERAL BIOLOGY II

TEXTBOOK: Biological Science: V2 Evolution, Diversity and Ecology, 2nd edition by Scott Freeman. Plus additional readings.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course emphasizing the diversity of life through a survey of the diversity of organisms inhabiting the biosphere. Emphasis is placed on ecology, evolution, and behavior, and interaction of the organisms studied.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will demonstrate understanding of:

  • the modern system of taxonomy and classification
  • modes of nutrition in prokaryotic organisms
  • diversity of life styles found in the Protoctista
  • classification and structural detail of Fungi
  • structure of plants
  • evolutionary trends in the Kingdom Plantae
  • significance of seeds, pollen, and flowers as evolutionary advances
  • structural systems of animals
  • association of systems structure and ecology of invertebrate animals
  • behavior of animals
  • inter-relationships between diverse organisms
