Timeline for the Process to Update Meredith’s Athletics Identity
Fall 2006
-Meredith College athletic teams begin competing as a provisional member of the USA South Athletic Conference in August 2006.
-In preparation for full conference membership during the 2007-08 season, President Maureen Hartford appoints a committee to update Meredith’s athletics identity.
-The College’s plans to consider changing Meredith’s mascot are announced via the Fall 2006 issue of Meredith Magazine.
Winter 2007
-At their January 2007 meeting, the athletics identity committee meets and adopts guiding principles that will help shape the design of Meredith’s new athletics logo package.
-Meredith College receives overwhelming response via email, web site, notes and letters over the potential mascot change.
-On January 25, 2007, SGA and the athletics identity committee sponsor a student forum to gather student opinion about changing to a new mascot.
-President Hartford announces the College’s decision to keep the “Angel” in Meredith’s athletics mascot via email to students, alumnae and faculty/staff.
March – May 2007
-Representatives from the athletics identity committee begin reviewing designer proposals and investigating the process to trademark Meredith’s sports nickname.
-Skye Designs begins designing elements of Meredith’s athletics identity.
-The athletics identity committee meets and begins reviewing initial concepts and typography styles. These concepts and sketches are presented to the Alumnae Association Board of Directors during their March 30, 2007, meeting.
-The athletics identity committee receives input from Meredith’s athletics staff about their preference for adding a descriptor to the Angel nickname for sports purposes.
June – July 2007
-The athletics identity committee meets and endorses the new design for Meredith’s block “M”. The committee evaluates the Angel-related nicknames suggested by the Meredith community throughout the process and makes its selection.
-PAVE Creative Group, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., begins creating logo designs.
-Meredith College officially enters the USA South Athletic Conference on July 1.
-The athletics identity committee meets to evaluate designs presented by Pave Designs and selects two design directions to pursue further.
-Representatives from the Meredith community are invited to provide feedback on the two different design directions. A total of eighteen community members participate in this step of the process, including student-athletes, alumnae leaders, current students, members of Meredith’s athletics staff, and college administrators.
August 2007
-Feedback gathered on logo directions is submitted to Pave Designs and, on August 2, the committee votes on Meredith’s final logo selection.
-An athletics season kick-off and logo unveiling is scheduled for 4 p.m. on August 22, 2007, in Jones Auditorium.
-The Meredith College Volleyball team will kick-off the Fall 2007 athletics season with a match against Va. Wesleyan at the Emory and Henry Invitational on August 31.
