2008 Volleyball Season Preview

In 2008, the Avenging Angels volleyball team looks to build off their first year as a member of the USA South conference.

"We gained a lot of great knowledge of other conference schools last year.  We are working hard this year to capitalize on our strengths to make us more competitive with conference schools," said Coach Fiona Barkley.  "Between the strength of our seasoned returners and the athleticism of our new players, we will have more depth as a complete program."

The Meredith College volleyball team is expecting great things from its seven veteran players.  In 2007, junior outside hitter Morgan White received USA South, team, and North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) honors, slating a .227 hitting percentage with a total of 350 kills. The Avenging Angels will rely on her dynamic presence on the outside again this year. Along with White, the 2008 season will offer another opportunity for great things from senior setter Laura Sayabouth, who led the team in 2007 with 948 assists gaining her USA South, team and NCCSIA honors. Senior Sara Elliot, the team's 2007 MVP, will be relied upon for her skills on both offense and defense. Elliot returns after a season with a total of 314 digs and 208 kills. Her court presence and leadership will help carry the Angels.  Senior Kayla Carter was third on the team in digs in 2007 with 243. The returning crew also includes sophomore Mallory Booker who was a key outsider hitter in 2007, and junior middle blockers Lesley Bass and Ashleigh VanDriesen.  Freshman MaryBeth Finegan and Emily Anderson look to see consistent playing time on defense and to add depth to the roster.

"This class brings with it more high level experience than any class in the past," said Coach Barkley. "All four freshmen have played club volleyball with experience at regional and national tournaments. This group has competed against some of the top talent in the nation, including other 2008 graduates that have gone on to play for elite DI programs."

Meredith begins play on the road at the Emory and Henry tournament on August 29 against Milligan.
