About the Coaches

Head Coach: Fiona Barkley

Fiona Barkley enters her third year as head coach of the Meredith College volleyball team. The 2008 season saw Meredith complete their highest ever finish in the USA South Athletic Conference and momentum building for the future.

Formerly an assistant coach at N.C. State University from 2004-2005, Barkley trained defensive systems and serving strategy while assisting with all aspects of this ACC team. In addition, Barkley coordinated team travel, support staff, special events, video scouting systems and summer camps.

Barkley’s college coaching career also includes time as assistant coach at Lynn University and recruiting coordinator at her alma mater, Elon University. During her time at Elon, she signed recruits who went on to earn team and conference honors. She finished up her time at Elon in 2003 as interim head coach.

In 1998, Barkley began coaching club volleyball for Piedmont Volleyball Club and later went on to work for Cobb-Atlanta Volleyball Club in Atlanta, Ga. Through the years Barkley has become IMPACT certified and has continued to work summer volleyball camps with such programs as UNC, NC State, Duke, Elon, Furman and Emory.

As a four-year collegiate letter winner at Elon University, Barkley was named team captain and MVP. For her performance as an outside hitter, she was named to Elon’s 1,000 Digs and 1,000 Kills Club. Barkley earned a Bachelor of Science in leisure/sport management from Elon in 1999.

In addition to her duties with the volleyball team, Barkley is also the summer camps coordinator for Meredith College. She also teaches First Year Experience and as an advisor for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Barkley also serves as an Assistant Coach for the NC Elite Volleyball Club 18-1 team.

 


Assistant Coach: Liz Richardson

Liz Richardson enters her second year as assistant coach of the Meredith College Volleyball team. The Rocky Mount, N.C., native serves on the staff of Coach Fiona Barkley.

Richardson comes to Meredith with a broad background in sports. Her collegiate career included playing volleyball and softball at Peace College. She then transferred to North Carolina State University and served two seasons as a manager for the Wolfpack volleyball program. During her time there she aided coaches and athletic trainers with practice and game administration. In 2006, she served as an assistant coach for the junior varsity team at Millbrook High School.

Other athletic experience includes working for the East Carolina University athletic ticket office, North Carolina High School Athletic Association, and the N.C. State equipment room in Reynolds Coliseum. Richardson also has volunteered in various areas to include the State and Regional Hershey Track and Field Meets, Special Olympics and the Senior State Games.

Richardson gained a Master of Science in exercise and sport science with a concentration in sports management from East Carolina University and her undergraduate degree from N.C. State University with a concentration in sports management and a minor in business administration and coaching education.
