Meredith College Tennis

Season wrap up
2005-2006 TeamThe Meredith College Tennis completed the 2005-2006 season with a record of 4-12 competing in a strong regionally and nationally ranked schedule. The season record could have easily been 7-9 as Meredith lost in close 3 setters and 5-4 scores at the conclusion of 3 of the matches. The team had only 2 returning varsity players due to the graduation of last years class which required the incoming freshman class to compete in a strong schedule immediately. The future looks bright as the team will return all of the varsity line-up except graduating Senior Leigh Smith. With a strong freshman recruiting class coming in, Meredith is expected to quickly turn the program around next season.

Coach Mary Winfrey-Kovell will be retiring from her position as Women's Tennis Coach and Asst. Professor in Health, Exercise, and Sports Science at the conclusion of the 2005-2006 academic year. Coach Kovell has been coaching and teaching for 20 years, six of which were at Meredith College. Coach Kovell has decided to retire so that she can return to school to continue her education and pursue other interests. Coach Kovell completed her tenure as Meredith College's Tennis coach with a record of 54-45. The tennis team was ranked as high as 10th regionally and she had players that were regionally ranked in both singles and doubles.
