Meredith Tennis Finishes Season at the NCAAs

Sewanee, Tenn. - The Meredith College Angels (14-4) played a tough match against Huntingdon College in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Sewanee, Tenn. The Angels dropped the match 5-2. The doubles for Huntington won 2-1 and it was too big of difference to make up for singles matches.

This year under the direction of first year coach Kelly Weaver, the team is back on the path of success. She turned around a team that finished last season with a losing record to one that gained 14 wins and only 3 losses this season. The last NCAA bid for the tennis team was in 2001.

This is the second NCAA bid (Soccer and Tennis) for the Meredith College athletics department this year. The last time the Angels had two teams (Basketball and Tennis) in the NCAA tournament during the same year was in 2001.

Meredith College Tennis Gains NCAA Bid

Raleigh, N.C. – The field for the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship has been announced and Meredith College (14-3) received an at large bid. They will take on Huntingdon (Ala.) (10-6) in the first round in Sewanee, Tenn. on May 4 at 2:00 p.m.

Meredith Defeats Barton for Second Time

Wilson, N.C. - The Meredith College Tennis Team ended their season on a high note, defeating Division II Barton College for the second time this season, 7-2.

The Angels won two out of three doubles points, with a strong performance at number one doubles by Kathryn Maples and Meredith Roberson, defeating Chelsia Hsieh and Kristen Packer 8-3. Sydney Williford and Caitlin Dillon defeated Summer Chase and Lyndal Brown 8-4 at number three doubles, bringing their record to 11-4 for the season. Meredith again did not let up as they entered singles play, winning five out of six singles matches. Freshman Kathryn Maples played great tennis to finish off Kristia Cedano at number two singles 6-2, 6-0. Other wins for the Angels came from Williford (#3), Martin (#4), Bitler (#5), and Dillon (#6).

The Angels end their Spring season with a record of 14-3, and are awaiting to hear if they will receive a NCAA bid.

Meredith Tennis Tops Pfeiffer, Finish at Barton

Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith College Tennis Team bounced back after Tuesday’s close match with Christopher Newport and played at a high level to defeat Division II Pfeiffer University 7-2.

Sydney Williford and Caitlin Dillon clinched the first win at number three doubles 8-3, while Amanda Bitler and Morgan Martin pulled out a close match at number two doubles 8-6 after trailing 6-5.

In singles play, the Angels dominated and won five out of six singles matches. Sophomore Caitlin Dillon secured the win against Pfeiffer by winning at number six singles 6-3, 6-3. Junior Sydney Williford was the last on the court, and battled to pull out a win at number three singles 6-3, 5-7 (10-8).

This win against Pfeiffer brings the Angels record to 13-3, and improves their confidence as they travel to take on Barton College this Saturday.

Meredith Falls to Christopher Newport in Close Match 5-4

Newport News, Va. - The Meredith College Tennis Team (12-3) hung tough but fell just short of defeating an undefeated Christopher Newport team on April 10th. The Angels gave CNU one of their closest matches of the season, losing 5-4.

Meredith’s number two doubles duo of Morgan Martin and Amanda Bitler rose to the occasion and defeated Frannie Shivar and Brittany Stevens 8-6, ending CNU’s 32-match winning streak at number two doubles. Other wins for Meredith College came at number two singles (Kathryn Maples def. Stephanie Lebland 6-1, 6-1), number four singles (Morgan Martin def. Brittany Stevens 6-4, 6-1) and number five singles (Amanda Bitler def. Liz Thedford 6-3, 6-2).

The Angels are prepared to bounce back in their final home match against Pfeiffer University this coming Thursday, April 12 at 3:30. They then finish the season at Barton College on April 14th at 3pm.

Meredith Returns from Atlanta with Two Wins

Meredith (12-2) again entered singles ahead 2-1 after a strong showing in doubles. Overall, the Angels dominated in singles to go home 2-0 after the weekend.

The Meredith Tennis Team has a week of tough practice ahead to prepare for their final three contests of the season, and currently have a record of 12-2. The Meredith team is anxious to take on Christopher Newport away on April 10, followed by their final home contest of the season vs. Pfeifer College on April 12. Meredith ends its season Saturday, April 14 away at Barton College for its second match-up this Spring.

Angels Sweep Pacers on the Season

Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith College Tennis team swept Peace College for the second time this season taking all 9 matches on the day. The Angels (10-2) are coming off their fourth straight win and fifth 9-0 sweep of the year. Meredith looks to enter USA South athletic conference play strong next year after going 6-1 so far against future conference rivals.

The Angels are currently ranked #20 in the Atlantic South.

The team next heads to Georgia to take on Spelman and Agnes Scott over the weekend.

Meredith Tennis Sweeps Battling Bishops

Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith College (8-2) picked up its eighth win on the season and 3rd match sweep on the year. The Angels played incredibly focused to win all doubles and singles matches against NC Wesleyan. Meredith Roberson played with intensity at number one singles, and prevailed 7-5, 6-2.

Meredith will host Averett University this coming Saturday at noon.

Meredith Tennis Gains Another Win

Greensboro, N.C. - The Meredith College Tennis Team (7-2) defeated Greensboro College 8-1. The Angels started off very strong in doubles, sweeping Greensboro in all three doubles matches. Meredith Roberson and Kathryn Maples battled from a 3-6 deficit to comeback and win 8-7 (7-3) at number one doubles. Meredith College continued to hold onto the momentum during singles, and won five out of six singles matches to seal the win.

Hilton Head Updates, Meredith Wins 3 out of 4

The Meredith College Tennis team started off strong in Hilton Head, squeaking out a 5-4 victory over Olivet College (Olivet, Michigan) on March 4, 2007. Meredith's number one doubles combination of Meredith Roberson and Kathryn Maples made a strong comeback after trailing 3-0 to oust Rachel Vilums and Mallory Vailey 8-5. With a strong start in doubles, the Meredith team entered singles leading 2-1. Singles wins came early from Junior Sydney Williford at number three singles, who defeated Abbie Utberg 6-2, 6-0, and Amanda Bitler, at number five singles, who topped Corey Jager 6-0, 6-2. The clinching match came down to number four singles, where Meredith Junior Morgan Martin battled it out to defeat Jaime Morrrison 6-4, 7-6(1) in a nail biter that gave Meredith College its first win at Spring Break in Hilton Head.

Meredith continued play later in the day, and played strong against Baldwin-Wallace College. Meredith's number one doubles team of Roberson and Maples just fell short against the duo of Britney Shy and Tiffany Allison 8-7(4). Meredith College experienced its first loss of the season to Baldwin-Wallace 9-0.

The team bounced right back, tackling Northern Kentucky University the following day, and experienced its second victory of the season against a DII school. Meredith's Amanda Bitler and Morgan Martin played with extreme intensity to secure a win at number two doubles 8-4. Sophomore Caitlin Dillon rose to the occasion and defeated Devan Yates at number five singles to secure a win for Meredith and improve the tennis team's record to 5-1.

The Angels ended their Hilton Head trip on a high note, playing incredibly strong against St. John Fisher to secure a victory 6-2 before heading back to Raleigh. Meredith's singles line-up continued to improve throughout the week, and Meredith dominated number one through five singles before the match was called at 6-2.

Meredith's record improved to 6-1 for the season, and they are ready to take on Methodist away on Wednesday March 14th at 3pm. Full scores are listed below.

Angels Sweep Away Peace, Win Third in a Row

Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team (3-0) picked up its third straight win and second win against future USA South athletic conference competition. The Angels took the lead in doubles and never looked back in its second straight match sweep winning 9-0.

The Angels next travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for four matches in three days beginning on Sunday March 4th.

Angels Dominate the Panthers, Win Two in a Row

Ferrum, Va. - The Meredith College (2-0) tennis team dominated Ferrum College by winning 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. The doubles teams took care of business early in the day by winning their matches 8-2, 8-3, and 8-0. Then the singles matches were won from top to bottom 6-0, 6-0, combining to a sweep by winning their matches with a cumulative 72-0 game score. They added their second win on the season after defeating D-II Barton College earlier in the week.

Meredith next travels to cross town rival Peace College on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.

Meredith Tennis Picks Up First Win on the Season Over D-II Barton

Raleigh, N.C. – The Meredith College Tennis team took out local Division II Barton College 5-2 in a rain shortened event. The Meredith Team started off doubles strong winning 2 out of 3 matches. They then went on to take three out of four of the singles events before the last two were ended due to rain. Meredith College had a strong start, and captured the #2 and #3 doubles points to go into singles ahead 2-1. Junior Morgan Martin, who formerly played tennis at UNC-Asheville, and Freshman Amanda Bitler fought hard to pull out an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles which gave the team extra confidence entering singles. Freshman Kathryn Maples had her first official collegiate dual match win over Meaghan Lynch at #2 Singles, 7-6(5), 6-1. After a tough first set, Maples was determined to play her game and close out the match. Amanda Bitler used her consistency to out-steady Summer Chase at #5 Singles, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Caitlin Dillon played determined and focused to beat Kristen Pacher at #6 Singles and seal the win against Barton 5-2. Juniors Sydney Williford (#3 Singles) and Morgan Martin (#4 Singles) were leading against their opponents when the match was stopped due to continued rain.

This is a strong start for the Angels as they get set to start playing future conference opponents and then head to Hilton Head, S.C. Meredith travels on Saturday to play Ferrum College.

Tennis Set to Start Spring Season

Raleigh, N.C. – The Meredith College Tennis team is set to open their spring season at home on Wednesday against Barton College. The match is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. The Angels are coming off a strong appearance in the Intercollegiate Southern Championships in Columbia, SC. Meredith College was the only Division III member attending. The Angels will continue to be playing out of their division against Barton who is a Divison II member. Coach Kelly Weaver is challenging her team as they get prepared for USA South Conference competition next year.

Meredith Tennis Starts the Season
Raleigh, NC – The Meredith College tennis team has had a promising start to the season. They started off in the Meredith College Invitational held at the Cary Tennis Park the weekend of September 15. Freshman Kathryn Maples won the Flight B Finals over teammate Amanda Bitler 7-5, 6-1. In Flight A, Junior Meredith Roberson won the consolation match 6-1, 6-3 over teammate Sydney Williford. In the doubles competition, Kathryn Maples/Sydney Williford gained a third place finish over fellow Meredith players Lauren Christ/Meredith Roberson.

Meredith then went to the ITA Tournament at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. This brought out some the best competition they will face all year. Some of the teams included Washington & Lee (#2 NCAA ranking) and Mary Washington (#18 NCAA ranking). A good showing was accomplished at this tournament with first round wins by Meredith Roberson in the A Flight Main Draw and Lauren Christ in Flight B.

After facing a rain out against Shenandoah and Mary Baldwin, the Angels next play in the Intercollegiate Southern Championships in Columbia, SC.


Weaver Named as New Head Tennis Coach and Assistant Athletic Director
Raleigh, NC - Meredith College announces the appointment of Kelly Weaver as Head Tennis Coach and Assistant Athletic Director effective September 4, 2006.

Weaver is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. While at UVA, she was a scholarship tennis player who served as a team captain and was voted Most Valuable Player. She has also worked with the UNC-Chapel Hill Athletic Department, NC State University Counsel, as well as leading tennis clinics at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club. Weaver has the experience to elevate the Meredith College program to the next level.

“Terry Holland and Craig Littlepage gave her glowing recommendations. Phil Rogers, her former coach at UVA, stated that in his many years of coaching there that Kelly may very well be one of¸ if not the best, all-around people that he had the opportunity to work with in his tennis programs,” said Jackie Myers, Meredith College Athletic Director.

Weaver takes over a program that ended the season with a 4-12 record against a very tough schedule that featured top ranked NCAA Division III teams from the region and nation.
