Calvert Named to NCCSIA All-State Team

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Eleven student-athletes from seven schools form the 2007 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State Women’s Soccer Team.

Meredith’s Alex Calvert was named as a midfielder to the team, a freshman midfielder from Wilson, N.C., was the 2007 USA South Rookie of the Year. For the year, Calvert tallied 29 points on 13 goals and three assists with a team-high three game winning goals. Calvert was named First Team All-Conference while also earning USA South Rookie of the Week honors once this fall.

The lineup of the All-State team was dominated by the USA South Athletic Conference with six of the 11 spots.


Calvert and Buryk Gain NSCAA/Adidas Honors

Raleigh, N.C. - Anna Buryk and Alex Calvert were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas NCAA Division III All-South Region Third Team.

Buryk, a junior from Fayetteville, N.C. had three goals and six assists for the Avenging Angels. Calvert, a freshman from Wilson, N.C. provided 13 goals and three assists.


2007 Soccer Season Recap

Meredith’s soccer team finished fourth in the regular season of the USA South athletic conference with a 6-3 record and 10-7 overall.  The Avenging Angels hosted the conference quarterfinal game and picked up their first ever conference tournament win by defeating Ferrum 4-0.  Meredith then headed to play Methodist, losing to the eventual tournament champion. 

Non-conference wins during the regular season included defeating Guilford, Agnes Scott and Spelman.

Meredith Ends Season at USA South Tournament

Fayetteville, N.C. - The Meredith Avenging Angels ended their season with a 5-0 lost to Methodist in the USA South Tournament semifinals. Meredith finished fourth in the conference and had seven wins over conference foes and eleven wins total for the season. Maggie Hart was named to the 2007 USA South Women's Soccer All-Tournament Team.

Before the game, the USA South All-Conference award receiptents were honored. Alex Calvert led the way for Meredith with her Rookie of the Year and first team honors.

Meredith Soccer Moves Into Semifinals of USA South Conference Tournament

Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith College won their first ever USA South Athletic Conference tournament game, defeating Ferrum 4-0.  Meredith Cowart scored the first goal with an assist by Nicole Boucher.  The other goals were scored by Kristy Knight, Heather Beasley and Alex Calvert.

The Avenging Angels will now head to Methodist University to take on the Monarchs on Friday at 2:30pm in the USA South Semifinals. The game will be web cast.

Meredith Drops Close One to Methodist, Get Ready for USA South Tournament

Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith and Methodist played to a deadlocked, scoreless first half.  Methodist came right out in the second half and scored a goal within the first two minutes to score the only goal of the game.  The Avenging Angels finish the season in fourth place in the conference.

The official seeding for the USA South conference tournament should be announced on Sunday at the conclusion of the two conference games.  


Avenging Angels Shut Out Pacers

Cary, N.C. -  Meredith was too much for Peace, shutting out the Pacers 5-0 on an overcast afternoon.  The Avenging Angels got on the scoreboard with a goal from Freshman Alex Calvert at the 26 minute mark.  It turned out to be all Meredith would need in cruising to a win over the cross-town rival. 

It was a balanced attack with two goals from Nicole Boucher, one by Maggie Barilich, and Heather Beasley scoring her first career goal.  Shae Tharrington provided a shut out in goal.

The Avenging Angels finish up the regular season hosting Methodist University on Saturday at 4 pm at SAS Soccer Park. The game will also be web cast.

Meredith Drops Close Game to Greensboro

Raleigh, N.C. – The Avenging Angels dropped a tough game at Greensboro College losing 2-0.  The game remained scoreless until the Pride scored after the 70 minute mark. 

With the loss, Meredith falls to fourth place in the USA South Athletic Conference.

Meredith next hosts two home games at SAS Soccer Park in Cary.  On Wednesday, cross-town rival Peace College visits at 4 pm.  The Methodist Monarchs come up on Saturday at 2 pm to finish off the regular season.  Both games will be web cast.


Avenging Angels Prey on Quakers

Raleigh, N.C. – The Avenging Angels pulled out a physical win against non-conference opponent Guilford College winning 2-1.

In a scoreless game at half time, Meredith came out pressing Guilford.  In the 67th minute, the Avenging Angels got on the board with a header from Alex Calvert off of a goal kick by Nicole Boucher.  Fourteen minutes later, Guilford hit a floater that just went over goalie Shae Tharrington’s head.   It only took four minutes for Meredith to score the game winner. With 4:11 remaining in the game, Anna Buryk scored with an assist provided by Alex Calvert. 

The win was the first on the season over an Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent.

Meredith next travels to play a conference game against Greensboro College at 2:30 pm on Saturday.  It will be a key battle for second place in the USA South Athletic Conference and seeding for the conference tournament. 


Avenging Angels Beat Hornets

Winchester, Va.  – The Avenging Angels soccer team continued on their four game conference winning streak, defeating Shenandoah 9-1. 

Meredith was led by Freshman Alex Calvert who scored the first two goals including the game winner.  Nicole Boucher added two goals and an assist in the win. 

Other goals were provided by Anna Buryk, Emmy Errante, and Maggie Hart.

The Avenging Angels next host Guilford in a non-conference game at Broughton High School on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.  The game will also be web cast.


Tharrington Named USA South Defensive Player of the Week

Fayetteville, N.C. – Shae Tharrington was named the USA South Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 1-7.

Shae Tharrington, Meredith - The Lynchburg, Virginia freshman goalkeeper filled in at goal due to an injury and helped the Avenging Angels to a 1-1 record last week. In a 9-0 win over USA South foe Averett, Tharrington picked up her first collegiate shutout.

In a 2-1 loss to regionally-ranked Roanoke, Tharrington kept the Avenging Angels in the contest by making six saves.


Meredith Falls to Maroons

Salem, Va.  – The Avenging Angels fell short in a tough battle with the Maroons of Roanoke College losing 2-1.  Roanoke College came into the contest ranked as the fifth best team in the south.

Roanoke got on the board first in the 16th minute, but the Avenging Angels clamped on the defense.  Meredith tied up the score with a goal from Freshman Alex Calvert and an assist from Anna Buryk.  The game went into the half with a 1-1 tie.  The Maroons came out in the second half and provided the game winning goal at the 47 minute mark.

The Avenging Angels next head to a conference match at Shenandoah on Saturday at 1:00 pm.


Meredith Downs Averett 9-0

Durham, N.C. – The Meredith College soccer team continued their three game winning streak against conference opponents, downing Averett 9-0. 

The Avenging Angels have out scored their opponents 25-1 in these three games.  With the win, Meredith moves into third place in the USA South Athletic Conference standings.

Nicole Boucher scored the first two goals and added a third to lead the way for Meredith.  Other goals were provided by Alex Calvert, Maggie Hart, Jerica Moses, Kristy Knight, Meredith Cowart, and Emmy Errante. 

The Avenging Angels next head to a non-conference match against Roanoke College in Salem, Va. at 5:00 pm. 


Chadwick and Calvert Named USA South Players of the Week

Fayetteville, N.C. - Sarah Chadwick was named USA South Athletic Conference Defensive Soccer Player of the Week while Alex Calvert was named USA South Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

Sarah Chadwick - The Jacksonville, North Carolina freshman goalkeeper started each game last week and helped the Avenging Angels to a 2-1 record. In the three contests, Chadwick allowed three goals, recorded one shutout and stopped 12 shots. In a 5-0 win over USA South foe Ferrum, Chadwick stopped two shots and earned her third shutout of the season. In a 3-2 loss at Marymount, Chadwick made a week-high eight saves. Finally, in an 11-1 win at conference foe Mary Baldwin, Chadwick stopped two shots.

Alex Calvert - The Wilson, North Carolina freshman midfielder scored four goals and added two assists for ten points in a 2-1 week for the Avenging Angels. In a 5-0 win over USA South foe Ferrum, Calvert was credited with an assist off a corner kick. In a 3-2 loss at Marymount, Calvert opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute. Finally, in an 11-1 victory over USA South rival Mary Baldwin, Calvert tallied her first collegiate hat trick by scoring three goals. She also added an assist in the victory to total seven points.


Avenging Angels Tame Squirrels

Staunton, Va. – The Meredith College soccer team won their third conference game in a row by blowing past Mary Baldwin 11-1.  The Avenging Angels were led by Kristy Knight who had 9 points on the day scoring 4 goals and 1 assist.  Freshman Alex Calvert had a hat trick of three goals of her own along with one assist.  The barrage of goals was rounded off by two from Nicole Boucher, one by Karen Taylor and Margaux Spiegel.  Meredith held a 4-0 half time lead before pouring it on by scoring seven in the second half. 

On Saturday, the Avenging Angels lost a tough game at Marymount (Va.) 3-2.  Meredith held a 2-0 half time lead before giving up three goals in the second half.  The Meredith goals were scored by Alex Calvert and Nicole Boucher.

The Avenging Angels next hosts a conference match against Averett University at Duke University’s Koskinen Stadium on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.  The game will also be web cast and available here.


Meredith Downs Ferrum 5-0, Wins First Home Conference Game

Raleigh, N.C. – The Meredith College soccer team picked up its first home conference win by defeating Ferrum 5-0. 

The first goal of the game was provided by Nicole Boucher from a deflected shot off of the goal keeper.  The second goal was by Anna Buryk with Nicole Boucher on the assist.  Kristy Knight then went on to score two goals and provided an assist on Margaux Spiegel’s first collegiate goal. 

Meredith held a 2-0 lead at the half and extended it late in the game to 5-0. 

Sarah Chadwick added another shut out performance bringing her total to four on the year.

The Avenging Angels next head to a non-conference match up at Marymount (Va.) on Saturday at 4:30 pm. 


Meredith Drops to Christopher Newport, Get Ready for Home Game

Newport News, Va. – The Meredith College soccer team lost its first conference game to Christopher Newport 5-0.  Christopher Newport jumped to an early lead and took a 2 goal advantage into halftime.  Meredith was out shot 6-19. 

The Avenging Angels next host their first USA South athletic conference game against Ferrum on Tuesday at 4:00 pm at SAS Soccer Park. 


Meredith Picks Up First Ever USA South Win

Rocky Mount, N.C. – Meredith College picked up their first ever USA South athletic conference win in school history with the soccer team defeating NC Wesleyan 2-1.  Freshman Alex Calvert scored her second career goal in as many games with an assist from Chanese Hall.  Sophomore Maggie Hart scored the game winning goal on a penalty kick in the first half.  Freshman Sarah Chadwick quieted the Battling Bishops to one goal to hold on to the victory. 

The Avenging Angels extended their winning streak to four games by beating Louisburg College 6-0 on Sunday.  Goals were scored by Maggie Hart, Anna Buryk, Alex Calvert, Jerica Moses, Kristy Knight and Karen Taylor.  The team also earned the N.C. Wesleyan Classic title with the win.

Meredith next travels for a key USA South match up against Christopher Newport on Saturday.


Week in Review - 9/12/2007

Raleigh, N.C. – The Avenging Angels soccer team shut out the competition at the National Invitational Esprit DIII at WRAL Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. 

On Friday night, Meredith was led by Jerica Moses.  The senior midfielder scored two goals including the game-winner against Agnes Scott in a 3-0 victory in their opening game at the National Invitational Esprit DIII in Raleigh.  She scored on 2 of her 3 shots on goal.  Last year’s leading scorer, Maggie Hart, added a goal of her own.  Anna Buryk picked up two assists and Nicole Boucher one. 

Saturday night’s match-up against Spelman was a defensive battle.  Alex Calvert, freshman midfielder, scored the unassisted, game winning and only goal of the game during the 1-0 win over Spelman on Saturday night at the National Invitational Esprit DIII in Raleigh.  It was also Calvert's first career goal.

Goalkeeper Sarah Chadwick showed her toughness over the weekend.  The freshman goalie in her first two career starts provided two shutouts against Agnes Scott and Spelman Colleges. 

The Avenging Angels next head to Rocky Mount on Saturday to face N.C. Wesleyan in the N.C. Wesleyan Classic at noon.


Week in Review - 9/6/2007

The Avenging Angels soccer team returns from a tough outing in the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin Invitational against nationally ranked competition. The team dropped the first game 0-3 to host Va. Wesleyan and then fell the next day to Eastern (Pa.) 1-9.

Sophomore Carra Sykes scored the goal against Eastern, her first career goal for Meredith College.

The team next plays in the National Invitational Esprit DIII hosted by Meredith College at WRAL Soccer Stadium in Raleigh. They face Agnes Scott (Ga.) on Friday and Spelman (Ga.) on Saturday. Both games are at 8 pm.

USA South Preseason Poll ReleasedMeredith

Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith was selected to finish in a third place tie with Greensboro College.  Christopher Newport was selected to win the conference championship. The soccer team opens up their season on the road at Virginia Wesleyan on September 1 at 4 pm.
