The Angels soccer team won the 2nd Annual Meredith College Classic Sept. 28-29, 2003, with a decisive 11-0 victory over Hollins University. The other participants in the tournament were Randolph Macon Woman's College and Peace College.

On the tournament's opening day, Meredith battled Randolph Macon to a 2-2 tie in overtime. During the weekend, sophomore Ashley Harrison led the Angels, tallying five goals. Freshman Michele Andrejco posted four goals and one assist.

The Angels recorded their fourth shutout of 2002 during the tournament, thanks to strong defense led by sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Spangler. Freshmen Laura Young and Alison Stahl and sophomore Ashley Ellis also contributed to the defensive effort.

Junior Co-Captain Annie Palmquist said, "It's always nice to host a tournament for the fans and families, and I think that this weekend we showed everyone what the Meredith soccer program is capable of doing."

Coach Paul Smith started the tournament in 2001 to attract competitive opponents to Meredith's campus.

"We'd like to begin the tradition of bringing high-level athletic events to campus in order for our student athletes to show the Meredith community their talent and the results of their hard work," he said.

The Angels won their first game in the first annual Meredith College Soccer Classic by defeating Wesleyan College 2-1. The other participants were Peace College and the S.S.L. Carolina United Women's Amateur Team, a group of former players from NCAA Division I and Division II schools within the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Meredith is a Division III school.

Freshman forward Katie Fuller scored both Meredith goals in the match against Wesleyan. Freshman forward Emily Munden provided an assist for one of the goals. Wesleyan outshot Meredith 7-1 in the first 15 minutes of the game, but freshman goalkeeper Kathryn Spangler and defenders Annie Palmquist (sophomore), Amanda Smith (sophomore), Hannah Powell (freshman) and Jamie Pike (freshman) allowed no goals. Meredith led 2-0 at the half. In the 70th minute, Wesleyan midfielder Keri Tedford scored off a dribble attack, but the Angels defenders preserved the team's victory.

The Angels vs. Carolina United was an exhibition game. The CU team controlled the tempo throughout the match, but the Angels held the team to just one goal in the second half.
