SAAC - Sept. 29
Raleigh, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference presented its 'Pennies for a Purpose' Plaque to Meredith College at its volleyball match versus Peace yesterday. USA South Assistant Commissioner Mike Christie was on hand to present the plaque to Meredith Vice President for College Programs Jean Jackson, Meredith Director of Athletics Jackie Myers and Meredith Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Brittany Cornelius.
Meredith earned the 'Pennies for a Purpose' Plaque after collecting $2,372.50 in a 40-day period this past spring during the USA South community service competition. The Avenging Angels donated all of its collection to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed, 'Pennies for a Purpose', in 2008. This penny drive, in its second year, began on March 1 and continued until April 10. Until that time, schools were encouraged to collect loose change which would later be donated to an organization of their choosing. As a whole, USA South institutions collected $4,365.48.
