Tennis – Sept. 27
Fredericksburg, Va. - This past weekend the Meredith College tennis team participated in the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Meredith was one of twenty four other teams who also competed in the tournament.

Patience was the key to the weekend as rain forced a majority of the matches to Mary Washington’s six indoor courts. But when the Avenging Angels finally did get on the court they played some great tennis.

The highlight of the weekend was the doubles play of the Avenging Angels. The duo of Betty Edwards and Zannah Webster fought hard all weekend and advanced all the way to the doubles final. Katherine Maples and Alison Flanagan had a tough first round doubles match but bounced back and moved into the consolation final of their doubles draw. Molly Parks and Mary Kate Watson teamed up this weekend and played very well, as they too advanced to the consolation final.

In singles play, Meredith played very hard all weekend. Ashley Pearsall won a very exciting first round match over her opponent from Guilford College. Mary Kate Watson, Alison Flanagan, Betty Edwards, and Kathryn Maples also won their opening round singles matches. Casey Collins competed in the hardest draw of the weekend, the Championship Draw. She played two very tough opponents but played very well in both matches.

“Both Rachel and I are very proud of all the girls; all the hard work they have put in during practice is definitely paying off. They are improving every time they step on the court,” said Assistant Coach Andrew Waldrop.
