There will be a celebration on Friday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. in honor of the Meredith College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) winning the USA South Pennies for a Purpose competition. At the event, a check for $2,372.50 will be presented to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Other events scheduled include pushing Meredith President Maureen Hartford into the pool and throwing pies at the faces of Meredith faculty, both of which were incentives offered to encourage donations to the Pennies for a Purpose fundraiser.
WHO: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed Pennies for a Purpose in 2008. This penny drive, in its second year, began on March 1 and continued until April 10. Until that time, schools were encouraged to collect loose change which would later be donated to an organization of their choosing. With a grand total of $2,372.50, Meredith College is the Pennies for a Purpose champion for 2009. Meredith will donate its winning amount to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Mary Baldwin College raised $935.23 to finish second while Peace College's $391.21 rounded out the top-three.
WHEN: Meredith College students, staff and faculty will gather on Friday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the indoor pool in Weatherspoon Gymnasium on the Meredith College campus. Press is invited to attend the celebration to witness the event and interview participants.
WHERE: Weatherspoon Gymnasium pool on the Meredith College campus. Meredith College is located on Hillsborough Street, just off the I-440 Beltline. Enter Meredith on Main Campus Drive, follow campus directional signs around to Weatherspoon Gymnasium. Park in any available space.
