Jordan Smith Out For the Season

Raleigh, N.C. - Apr. 1
Meredith Coach Robert Luckadoo announced that freshman pitching sensation Jordan Smith will be unable to return to the Avenging Angel lineup in 2009. She sustained a season ending injury last week after fracturing her right foot after being hit by a wild pitch. Smith will be missed in the circle, in the field, and at the plate. Prior to her injury Smith had garnered two USA South Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Week honors and was a starter. She was outstanding in center field when not in the circle, maintaining a perfect fielding percentage for the year. Smith was the lead off hitter, and prior to her injury was in the top five in most of the Meredith softball's offensive categories.

Coach Luckadoo stated that, 'Words cannot express how much we have missed Jordan since her injury. Not only do we miss her in the circle because of her great arm, we miss her leadership, her offensive production at the plate, and the confidence she brings to the field each and every day. She is an awesome athlete, an awesome person, a tremendous leader on and off the field, and a huge part softball program here at Meredith. She will definitely be missed the remainder of this season on the field. But, I look forward to having her back healthy and better than ever in 2010.'

The freshman from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina (Fuquay-Varina High School) earned a 4-0 record the week of her injury, all versus USA South competition, for the Avenging Angels. In 19.1 innings pitched, Smith allowed four runs on eight hits with six walks and 30 strikeouts. In a 2-1, game-one, win over N.C. Wesleyan, Smith tossed a complete game allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts. In the second game of the doubleheader with N.C. Wesleyan, an 8-5 Meredith victory, Smith came on in relief to pitch the final 3.1 innings, earning the win by allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. In a 9-0, five-inning game one, victory over Mary Baldwin, Smith tossed her first career no-hitter as she allowed just two walks with 12 strikeouts. Smith then started the final game of the doubleheader, a 10-2 Meredith victory, and went four innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts to earn the win.
