The Meredith basketball team hosted Averett in a hard fought battle. The Avenging Angels lost down the stretch to the Cougars 58-52.
Meredith (4-14, 0-11 USA South) took a quick 7-4 lead out of the gate. Averett (9-7, 5-4) then led by as many as nine before the Avenging Angels whiddled the lead down to one before the half. Averett held the one point advantage at the half, 29-28.
The second half saw Meredith jump out to a six point lead with nine minutes remaining. Averett tied it up for the sixth time of the night with four minutes remaining in the game. Meredith took their last lead on two free throws by Caitlin McAllister with 3:03 remaining. Some timely rebounds and fouls shots down the stretch gave the win to the Cougars.
Meredith was led by Kristin Stewart with 15 points and nine rebounds. Brittany Cornelius added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Other top scorers included Megan Rahn with seven, Whitley Turner with six and both Courtney Kreber and Hunter Johnson with five.
Meredith next travels to Ferrum on Saturday before going to Peace on Monday. |
