Hall and Cornelius Named to NCCSIA Teams

SALISBURY, N.C. – Ten student-athletes, representing eight institutions, make up the fourth annual North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State women’s basketball teams released Monday.
Elizabeth City State University senior Celeste Trahan headlines the team as the first four-time all-state women’s basketball selection and joins Meredith College’s Nicole Hall the lone repeat honorees in 2007-08. Meredith and fellow USA South Athletic Conference member Greensboro College both had two students honored.
The squads consist of student-athletes from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA colleges and universities throughout the state. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the teams. The all-state basketball units consist of the top 10 vote-getters and include students involved in ties.

Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from North Carolina’s NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions for the purpose of promoting college athletics in the state. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina whose responsibilities include sports information.
NCCSIA selects all-state teams in the university (NCAA Division I) and college (Division II, III, NAIA, NCCAA) divisions for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and baseball. Over 500 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams since 2003.
Meredith Basketball wins USA South Sportsmanship Award
Fayetteville, N.C. – The USA South Athletic announced that the Meredith College basketball has earned the 2007-08 USA South Sportsmanship award. This award is voted on by members of other conference teams and is given to the team that has demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. This is the first for the Avenging Angel team.
"It means a great deal to me to see our athletes recognized and rewarded for the way they conduct themselves on and off the playing surface,” said Head Coach David Zinn. "We are honored to accept this award in our first season of competition in the USA South Conference and I think it speaks highly of the type of student-athlete we have representing Meredith College," said Zinn.
A voter stated she chose Meredith's women's basketball team "because they played aggressive but fair. Their use of appropriate language was also considerate."
During the 2004-2005 academic year the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted a Conference-wide Sportsmanship Award. The Award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of the USA South campuses.

Hall, Cornelius, and Johnson Named to USA South Teams
Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for women's basketball. Senior guard Nicole Hall was named to the second team for the conference while sophomore Brittany Cornelius earned honorable mention honors.
Hall, the senior from Raleigh, N.C. (Wakefield High School), had 441 points on the season and finished her career with 1,691. Within the conference, she finished first in assists, second in steals and fifth in scoring. Nationally she was fourth in assist, 27th in steals and 33rd in points per game.
Cornelius, the sophomore from Rockwell, N.C. (East Rowan High School), had 420 points on the season. Within the conference, she finished sixth in scoring, eighth in rebounding and thirteenth in assists. Nationally she was 52nd in scoring.
Hunter Johnson, the sophomore from Washington, N.C. (Pungo Christian Academy), was also named to the all-sportsmanship team. She was a contributor on the court as the fourth leading scoring and fourth leading rebounder for the team.
Meredith Basketball Drops in Season Finale
Staunton, Va. - Meredith dropped its final basketball game of the season to Mary Baldwin 88-72. Brittany Cornelius scored a career-high 34 points for Meredith to go with nine rebounds. Hall had 19 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in her last game for Meredith.
Mary Baldwin held a 46-38 advantage at halftime. Mary Baldwin out shot Meredith for the game 54% to 38%.
Meredith Falls to Greensboro
Greensboro, N.C. - Greensboro took the tip and never looked back, defeating Meredith 83-57. Greensboro held a 46-27 halftime lead.
Meredith out shot Greensboro for the game (25-62) 40% to (30-91)33%. Meredith was out rebounded 35 to 72.
Meredith was led by Nicole Hall with 24 points and seven rebounds. Brittany Cornelius added 18 points and nine rebounds.
Meredith finishes the regular season as they travel to Staunton, Va. to play Mary Baldwin on Friday at 7:00 pm.
Meredith Feels Sting From Hornets
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team fell in a USA South contest to Shenandoah 57-53. Meredith (6-16, 3-13 USA South) led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Shenandoah (11-11, 9-6) cut the lead to 3 at the half.
The second half saw Shenandoah take their first lead at the 18 minute mark of the second half, since starting the game out 1-0. Shenandoah was up by as many as six points, until a layup by Nicole Hall put Meredith back up by one with 8 minutes remaining. The game saw its last tie of the game at 53-all with two minutes remaining. Shenandoah closed it out with a layup and two free throws.
Meredith was led by senior Nicole Hall, who was honored before her last home game, with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Brittany Cornelius added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Meredith next travel to Greensboro on Wednesday and Mary Baldwin on Friday to finish out the regular season.
Avenging Angels Take Down Pacers
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team defeated cross town rival Peace in front of a packed house, 54-50. Key baskets by Nicole Hall, Brittany Cornelius and Whitley Turner down the stretch sealed the game for the Avenging Angels.
Peace led 24-20 at halftime. Meredith took the lead at 37-35 of the ten minute mark of the second half on a layup by Hunter Johnson.
Meredith was led by Nicole Hall with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Brittany Cornelius added 16 points and 8 rebounds. Whitley Turner had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Meredith out shot Peace from the field 45% to 28% for the game.
Meredith next hosts Shenandoah on Sunday at 2pm to close out their home schedule. Meredith seniors will be honored before the game.
Meredith Falls to Averett 
Danville, Va. - The Meredith basketball team (5-15, 2-12 USA South) dropped a road conference game, losing to Averett (9-13, 7-8 USA South) 45-49. Averett led the whole way, but Meredith cut the lead to two points on a jump shot by Nicole Hall with 1:55 left in the game.
Averett held a 23-19 lead at halftime. Brittany Cornelius led all first half scorers with nine. Hall was held to two points in the first half.
Meredith was led by Cornelius with 15 points, Hall with 13, and Whitley Turner with 10.
Meredith next hosts Peace College at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
Meredith Drops to Captains in "Think Pink" Basketball Event
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith (5-14, 2-11 USA South) lost a hard fought battle with the Captains from Christopher Newport (15-4, 10-2 USA South), 91-79. Meredith took an early lead of as many as 12 points in the first half before the lead was closed going into the half. Christopher Newport held a 40-38 advantage at halftime.
Meredith led CNU by 7 points with 17:40 remaining in the second half. The game then evened out with the ninth tie of the game at the 8:20 mark at 68-all. Leading scorers for Meredith were Nicole Hall with a double-double of 22 points and 10 assists. Brittany Cornelius added 21 points and eight rebounds to go with Whitley Turner's 20 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
The "Think Pink" game encompassed several fund raisers in support of the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Meredith College athletics department sold pink “Avenging Angels” t-shirts, hosted a raffle and collected donations with all proceeds going to the fund. The Meredith basketball team and athletics staff then went to the Kay Yow "Hoops for Hope" game at NC State.
Meredith next heads to Averett on Thursday to take on the Cougars. They then finish out the home season hosting Peace and Shenandoah next weekend.
Angels Fall to Bishops
Rocky Mount, N.C. - Meredith College (5-13, 2-10 USA South) fell in a USA South battle with N.C. Wesleyan (7-11, 4-8 USA South). N.C. Wesleyan took the lead for good at the 11:30 mark in the second half with a three-pointer.
Meredith held a 28-27 advantage at the half. N.C. Wesleyan led by as many as five points early in the first half, then Meredith went on a streak to lead by as many as seven points. A jumper by N.C. Wesleyan at the 1:53 mark closed the Meredith lead to one. Nicole Hall led all first-half scorers with 13 points.
Leading scorers for the game included Brittany Cornelius with 24 points, Hall with 22 points and Whitley Turner with 8 points and 4 blocks.

Cornelius Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith basketball player Brittany Cornelius was named to the the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District (District 3) second team. Cornelius (Rockwell, N.C./ East Rowan) is an Accounting major with a 3.86 grade point average. She is also productive on the court, averaging 16.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Monarchs Take One From Meredith
Fayetteville, N.C. - The Meredith Avenging Angels dropped to Methodist 75-60. Nicole Hall had a career high 32 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds for Meredith.
Methodist held a 35-33 lead at halftime. Meredith tied the game up with a layup by Brittany Cornelius to start the second half. Methodist then hit a 3 point shot and didn't look back to finish with the 15 point lead. Both teams shot over 52% for the game.
Meredith next heads to N.C. Wesleyan to take on the Battling Bishops on Friday February 8th at 5:30 pm.
Meredith Drops One to Mary Baldwin
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team lost a see-saw battle with Mary Baldwin, falling 51-57. The Avenging Angels (5-11, 2-8 USA South) had the game tied up at 51-all with one minute remaining. A layup by the Squirrels (6-8, 3-5 USA South) with 39 seconds was all they needed for the win. Four free throws stretched the final score to a six point deficit.
Mary Baldwin held a 30-29 advantage at the half. Meredith out shot Mary Baldwin for the game with a 37% to 26% advantage. Meredith was 31% from 3-point range.
Meredith was led by Brittany Cornelius with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Nicole Hall added 15 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds. Whitley Turner and Courtney Kreber both added 6 points for the Avenging Angels.
Meredith next plays at Methodist on January 31 at 7:00 pm.
Avenging Angels Fall to Averett in Overtime
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith (5-9, 2-7 USA South) basketball team fell 63-69 in over time to Averett (4-9, 2-4 USA South). The Avenging Angels were led by Nicole Hall with 18 points and 9 assists. Hall surpassed the 1,500 career point total on her effort for the night. Courtney Kreber had a career high 16 points, while both Hunter Johnson and Whitley Turner had 10 points.
Meredith led 31-25 at half time. Meredith increased the lead to 15 with 8 minutes remaining. Averett chipped away at the lead and sent the game to overtime. The overtime was won by Averett 14-8 to give the Cougars their 2nd conference win on the year.
Meredith next hosts Mary Baldwin on Saturday at 2pm in their first ever conference meeting.
Pacers Get By Meredith
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith dropped their first-ever USA South athletic conference game with cross town rival Peace College, losing 61-62. The Avenging Angels (5-9, 2-6 USA South) held a 2 point advantage at halftime.
Meredith held a 7 point lead with 7:25 remaining until the Pacers tied it up just under the 6 minute mark. With the score tied at 59 all with just under a minute left, Peace went to the line and hit three free throws to seal the win. Meredith scored a quick two-pointer with three seconds to add to the final outcome, but it was not enough as time ran out after a missed free throw.
Meredith was led by Brittany Cornelius with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Nicole Hall added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Whitley Turner turned in 13 points.
Meredith next hosts Averett College on Thursday night in a USA South conference match-up.
Panthers Sweep Meredith
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith (5-8, 2-5 USA South) lost to Ferrum (6-6, 4-1 USA South) 58-72 in a conference basketball contest on Sunday afternoon. Meredith was led by Brittany Cornelius with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Nicole Hall had 15 points and Whitley Turner turned in 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Ferrum was led by Miranda Carrasco with 17 points. Alexandria Davenport had a double-double for Ferrum.
Ferrum held a 26-36 advantage at the half. Meredith out shot Ferrum for the game 43% to 40%.
Meredith next heads across town to face Peace on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
Pride Tops Avenging Angels
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith dropped a conference game against Greensboro on Thursday night, 63-84. Meredith was led by Brittany Cornelius with 17 points and 6 assists. Nicole Hall added 14 points and 9 rebounds. Courtney Kreber had a career high 12 points.
Greensboro was led by Danielle Duncan with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Dione Eccles added 17 points.
Greensboro held a 30-44 advantage at the half. Meredith out shot Greensboro 44% to 38% for the game.

Monarchs Get By Meredith
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith Avenging Angels (5-6, 2-3 USA South) fell to the Methodist Monarchs (6-3, 2-0) 63-71 in a USA South athletic conference basketball home game.
Methodist held a 34-27 advantage at halftime. Meredith was out shot 54% to 45% in the first half.
In the second half, Meredith cut the lead to 5 points with 7:00 remaining, but a couple quick baskets got Methodist up by 14 with 2:44 remaining. A late flurry by Meredith, cut the final deficit to 8 on a jumper by Whitley Turner.
Leading scorers for the game included Brittany Cornelius with 19 points/6 rebounds and Turner with 16 points/5 rebounds. Nicole Hall finished with a triple double of 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Ferrum, Va. - Meredith (5-5, 2-2 USA South) dropped to Ferrum (4-5, 2-0 USA South) 71-88 on the road in a USA South Athletic Conference game.
Meredith was behind by as many as 12 points in the first half, but cut the deficit to one with the score 33-34 at half time. Meredith tied up the game at 36-36 on a free throw shot from Amanda Street. Ferrum took control from that point on, out shooting Meredith 56% to 39% in the second half.
Nicole Hall completed a double-double with 21 points and 11 assists. Brittany Cornelius led Meredith in scoring with 22 points. Hunter Johnson added 13 points.

Meredith Downs Battling Bishops
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith Avenging Angels (5-4, 2-1 USA South) defeated N.C. Wesleyan (3-3, 0-1 USA South) 62-47 in their first USA South athletic conference basketball home game. Meredith earns their second conference win on the season.
Meredith held a 28-13 advantage at halftime. Meredith was much hotter from the field outshooting N.C. Wesleyan 40% to 29%.

Newport News, Va. - The Meredith Avenging Angels (4-4, 1-1 USA South) faced Christopher Newport (5-2, 1-0 USA South) in their second USA South athletic conference basketball road match-up of the weekend, losing 84-67. Meredith fell down 14-0 to start the game until the offense heated up and cut the lead to seven on a three pointer from Brittany Cornelius.
Christopher Newport held a 42-32 advantage at halftime. The first half was led by Brittany Cornelius with 14 points and Nicole Hall with nine. Courtney Kreber added seven.
Leading scorers for the game included Cornelius with a career high of 31 points. Hall added 17 and Whitley Turner with 8 points.

Meredith Gains First Ever USA South Basketball Victory
Winchester, Va. – The Meredith Avenging Angels (4-3, 1-0 USA South) defeated Shenandoah (2-6, 0-1 USA South) 75-70 in their first ever USA South athletic conference basketball match-up. Meredith came out of the gate taking a quick lead and didn’t give it back the rest of the game.
Meredith held a 37-23 advantage at halftime; the largest lead in the half. The first half was led by Whitley Turner with 16 points and Brittany Cornelius with 11 points. Amanda Street had five rebounds. Meredith out shot Shenandoah 44% to 32% in the first half.
Leading scorers for the game included Cornelius with 24, Turner with 21, and Nicole Hall added 16. Meredith’s leading rebounders were Cornelius with 11 and Street with nine.

Meredith Hits the Road to Start the New Year
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team (3-3) is coming off over a month layoff since their win on Novemeber 28. They head to Winchester, Va. to take on the Shenandoah Hornets at 2:00 pm on Saturday. This is the first USA South Athletic Conference game for Meredith. The series with the Hornets is tied at 2-2.
On Sunday, Meredith will head across Virginia to take on Christopher Newport at 2:00 pm. The Captains hold a 1-0 overall advantage in the series.

Nicole Hall Named USA South Player of the Week
Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has named Nicole Hall player of the week. Hall is the first Meredith basketball player to be named since joining the conference this fall.
USA South Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Nicole Hall, Meredith - The Raleigh, North Carolina senior guard nearly tallied a triple-double in leading the Avenging Angels to a 76-58 win over Salem in their only action last week. In the game, Hall notched a double-double by scoring 17 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. She also added nine assists, five steals and three blocks in the win.
Hall currently leads Meredith in scoring with 111 points and 1,361 career points. This places her second on Meredith's all time leading scorers list.
Avenging Angels Complete Sweep of Spirits
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith College swept the season series with Salem College, defeating them 76-58. Meredith won the match-up earlier in the season, 80-59.
Meredith came out with a balanced scoring attack with three in double-digits. The Avenging Angels were led by Nicole Hall with a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Hall also had 9 assists, just falling short of a triple-double. Whitley Turner provided 14 points and Brittany Cornelius 13 points. Lizzie Creech and Turner added 7 rebounds a piece.
The Avenging Angels out shot the Spirits 52% to 38%. Meredith also held a 49-34 rebound advantage. Meredith led 45-22 at the halftime.
Meredith continues their season with their first USA South Athletic Conference game heading to Shenandoah to take on the Hornets on January 5th.
Meredith Finishes Second in Invitational
Washington, D.C. - The Meredith College basketball team finished in second place at the Gallaudet Holiday Invitational. Meredith (2-3) fell to Lebanon Valley (5-0) 76-59 in the championship game. The Avenging Angels fell behind by 28 early in the second half, but cut the deficit to eight with three minutes to go. Lebanon Valley hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
Brittany Cornelius led the Avenging Angels with 17 points. Nicole Hall and Whitley Turner both added 15 points. Hall and Cornelius were named to the All-Tournament team.
Meredith gained a spot into the finals by beating host Gallaudet 48-45. The Avenging Angels overcame a 27% shooting percentage with tough defense and timely free throwing shooting down the stretch.
Meredith next hosts Salem College on Wednesday November 28 at 7 pm.
Meredith Tops Bison, Moves to Championship Game
Washington, D.C. - Meredith College defeated host Gallaudet University 48-45 in the first round of the Gallaudet Holiday Invitational. The Avenging Angels overcame a 27% shooting percentage with tough defense and timely free throwing shooting down the stretch. Meredith was led by Nicole Hall with 14 points and 9 steals.
Meredith next faces Lebanon Valley in the Championship game on Sunday at 3 pm.
Avenging Angels Down Spirits
Winston-Salem, N.C. - Meredith picked up their first win on the season with a 80-59 victory over Salem College. The Avenging Angels came out a little sluggish in the first half after two games in the last three days. Salem tied the score at 16 on a 3-pointer until Meredith went on a 22-7 run capped by Lizzie Creech's three pointer to extend the lead to 15 at the break. Meredith held Salem to 23% from the floor in the first half.
Salem used a run early in the second to cut the Meredith lead to seven points at the 11:59 mark (52-45) until the Avenging Angels used a 28-14 run to finish the game. The final margin ended at 21 on Jen Morton's putback of her own miss at the final buzzer.
Nicole Hall just missed a triple double with 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Whitley Turner scored a career-high 20 despite playing in foul trouble while Brittany Cornelius reached double figures with 12 to go along with seven rebounds. Hunter Johnson gave a solid effort with six points, six rebounds, and three assists. Amanda Street and Lizzie Creech added 8 and 7 points respectively. Meredith outrebounded Salem 42-30 and committed only ten turnovers.
Meredith next travels to Washington D.C. to play in the Gallaudet Thanksgiving Classic. The Avenging Angels take on Gallaudet on Saturday November 24 at 8:00 pm. They will play on Sunday against either John Jay or Lebanon Valley.
Meredith Falls in Emory and Henry Classic
Emory, Va. - Meredith College fell in their first two games of the season at the Emory and Henry Tip Off Classic.
The Avenging Angels dropped their first game on Friday, losing to Emory and Henry College 69-58. After taking a quick lead, Meredith fell behind by 18 late in the first half (39-21) but fought back to within three in the last two minutes of the game. Hot shooting and late free throws iced the game for Emory & Henry. Hard-nosed defense held Emory & Henry to 35% shooting in the second half as Meredith came up with 13 steals to their three.
On Saturday, Meredith lost their second game in the tournament falling 96-54 to Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe is a team receiving many votes in the national top 25 poll and returning five starters from last year's NCAA tournament team. Meredith fell behind 19-4 but clawed back to within nine, holding that margin steady for most of the first half before a late run put Oglethorpe up by 20 at the break. That margin would stay steady until Oglethorpe's pressure defense and Meredith's foul trouble gave the Stormy Petrels a late run increasing the final margin to the largest deficit of the night. Freshman Whitley Turner just missed a double-double in just her second collegiate game with 16 points and nine rebounds. Brittany Cornelius had six rebounds.
Nicole Hall was named to the All Tournament Team. She scored 17 with six rebounds against Oglethorpe and 27 points and 5 rebounds against Emory and Henry.
Meredith next heads to Salem on Monday at 7 pm.

Raleigh, N.C. - The 2007-08 basketball season preview is now available. The Avenging Angels open up their season on the road at the Emory & Henry Tip-Off Classic on November 16.
Meredith's first home game is on November 28 at 7 pm against Salem College.
USA South 2007-08 Preseason Basketball Poll Released
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith was selected to finish in seventh place in the USA South Athletic Conference preseason basketball coaches poll.
Ferrum had four first place votes and was selected to win the conference championship.
The basketball team opens up their season on the road at Emory & Henry in the Emory & Henry Tip-Off Classic on November 16 at 6 pm.
