2006-07 Season Wrap Up
The 2006-07 season for the Meredith College basketball team was a season of growing and learning to play together. The 2007-08 season is sure to be an exciting one as the team moves into USA South athletic conference play for its first season.
Season Review
The end of the season showed great improvement and the team was working
together. The team hit a stretch of games at the end of the season where
they played tough and won three games in a row. Two of those included victories
over soon to be conference rivals N.C. Wesleyan (W/61-54) and Peace (W/74-69).
Both wins avenged loses earlier in the season on the road. Coach Zinn stated,
“We played well at the end of the year. We overcame our youth, made
progress and the team worked real hard. We started three freshman most of
the year and they will bring that experience back next year. Nicole Hall
had a big year. Brittany Cornelius and Caroline Hines stepped up as freshmen
and played well. Candice Sasnett also improved her game and added to the
team.”
Next Year
Next years basketball team is looking to build off the run at the end of
the season and carry it over. They are looking to add depth and increase
the amount of scorers on the team to allow players to move into their natural
positions. “I am excited about the recruiting group we hope to bring
in. We have a few definite commitments and are close to several others”
said Zinn. Meredith College will bring back their strong young class with
the leadership of Nicole Hall as a senior. She ended the season with 1,250
career points and will look to add to that total.
The Angels will also begin their first year in the USA South athletic conference. The conference will increase the amount of competition and opportunities for recognition for the players. “It is exciting to be part of a great conference. It is tough and competitive and we are looking forward to the challenge. The team is excited about having the opportunity to play for something at the end of the year. It will give us the extra motivation at the end of the season and the need to start the season strong because we have to be ready to go from Day 1”, said Zinn. The USA South has an end of season conference tournament that allows the opportunity of the winner an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This opportunity combined with post season awards will increase the enthusiasm of the team.
