Dr. Addiss will kick off the week of Asia-related events with " Zen
Painting" slide lecture, calligraphy demonstration and hands-on calligraphy
workshop for student-participants. Please RSVP for this unique opportunity
to observe and work with a noted scholar and master calligrapher.
(We need to know how many brushes and calligraphy papers
to prepare).

We will try to accommodate all who are interested, though space is limited.
Students will be given first priority; faculty, staff and alumnae are
also invited. People are welcome to float in and out to observe Raku ware
creation process (also all are invited observe firing process and tea
ceremony on Friday).

3 minutes away from Meredith’s gates. It contains a peaceful Japanese
contemplation garden and an extensive study collection of flora that are
indigenous to Asia. Take a stroll with a volunteer botanist and learn
more about the world growing at your feet (and over your head, and before
your eyes…)

Shibori workshop with Georgia Springer, art faculty in textile art. Make
your own silk and rayon scarves while learning the ancient Japanese art
of colorful shibori dyeing. Students will be given first priority, but
faculty, staff and alumnae are also invited. RSVP required; a $4 materials
fee will be charged. Also check out her students’ Tibetan Prayer
Flags on display in Cates Student Center.
*Particiapants should bring a pair of latex/plastic gloves and
old clothes.
