Susanne Holloway
When I carve a Great Blue Heron on a clay tile or sculpt a self-portrait morphing with a bug. I am expressing these deeply-held desires to experience and be a part of nature. By documenting and interpreting my subjects found in nature, I am in a sense making a collection that does not disturb nature, but instead increases appreciation for it. While exploring this concept in my work, I have been especially drawn to the subtractive processes of carving and printmaking, with its potential for mark-making as a visual ‘footprint’ of my hand’s collaboration in the creative process.
