I
love to witness change: leaves losing their chlorophyll, a building deteriorating,
wind rippling water, a field grooved from plowing—the physical transformation
of an intimate 'environment' that conveys an aesthetic quality. Picture a
curled tendril of clematis vine with bramble and orange construction fencing
in the background lit up by morning sun—that juxtaposition peaks my
interest. Miscellaneous, discarded or forgotten materials enliven the stillness
of the mostly dead, organic materials that I collect in the garage (my laboratory).
I
have found by allowing these three-dimensional objects to inspire structure
in an underpainting provides a strategy towards creating a dynamic jumping
off point: a place where I can return if I become lost or entangled. I fill
my studio with visual research such as seedpods and dried grapefruit skins.
These unusual organic materials allow me to stay focused on capturing an
essence of an original spark: my initial excitement.
