Artist Statement
I draw from my personal experience and surroundings, particularly nature as well as many types of music, poetry, and literature. Often I am attracted to subjects of a mysterious or surreal nature. I’m intrigued by the unknown and the fear that is often associated with it. Fantasy offers many avenues to explore these darker themes in a narrative form. However, I’m also interested in seeing how my imaginative and emotional qualities can relate to everyday experiences. I hope my art will inspire others to explore their subconscious fears or desires and examine how this affects their personality and relationships with others.
I tend to focus most on manipulating imagery. Occasionally I place people or objects in environments they would not normally appear such as having the sun shine at night or a person appearing in a time before they were born. Being able to tell a story visually is interesting to me. Skies and horizons as well as silhouettes/profile views recur often in my work. Exploring the influence of color is something I enjoy as well. The feel of a composition can change drastically due to changes in combination, value and intensity. I often use selective coloring to enhance imagery or create contrast within a monochromatic scheme. I prefer clean, simplistic designs which can effectively communicate a message. I’m hopeful my work will cause people to examine and question their own internal reactions to what they see.
