Artist Statement

Inside my brain there is a world that I have created where my emotions, opinions, and thoughts are all acted out visually by “creatures” that I have created. My goal as an artist is to personify these creatures using my abilities as a sculptor and craftsperson. These manifestations occur in interactive masks where the concept can literally be “put on”, and in pieces that are more sculptural, and less literal in their representation. I create my pieces to represent the kinds of people in my life or society, as well as my ideas, fears, and opinions; these images are usually transformed into aspects of nature since I am drawn to its building materials because of their texture and form. I am attracted to found objects as well, and mixing them with different sculptural materials because of the “realness” that they carry. People know objects like doorknobs, artificial flowers, and feathers; they know the sensory qualities about these objects, therefore my hopes are that I can bring a familiarity to my pieces and really bring them to life as if they existed in some twisted natural world.
