An exhibition by students in Fashion and Interior Design presents creations inspired by works of art. The work demonstrates the visual connection between different types of artistry and their interpretation of renowned artwork translated into expressions of fashion and interior design.

Wax Foundations:
Encaustic in the Southeast

Eleven artists from North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina contribute works that explore the idea of texture and depth through the medium of encaustic. Wax and pigment are combined to create lush, layered works that speak to the versatility of this medium.

Special Events related to the Wax Foundations exhibition include the following –

· Plant & Bee Walk & Talk
(Monday, Sept. 10, 10–11am, and Thursday, Sept. 13, 4–5pm, meet in Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center lobby) Join us on an interactive tour of Meredith's plants, trees, and bees to see how the art of encaustic is intimately connected with the natural world. The walk & talk will be given by Dr. William Landis and John Kincheloe and will begin at the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center.

· Curator Talk & Tour (Monday, Sept. 24, and Thursday, Sept. 27, 10am, meet in Weems Gallery) Student Curator Kristen Gallagher will give a thirty-minute tour of the exhibition, discussing the themes involved and answering audience questions.

· Encaustic Workshop & Artist Talk (Sat, Oct. 20th, time TBA, Durham Art Center) Taught by artist Reni Gower and open to both the public and Meredith students, this workshop will go over the basics of encaustic painting. $10 Workshop fee for student and SECAC attendees.

· Self-Guided Tours (during Gallery hours, Frankie G. Weems Gallery) Use one of the laminated tour cards to go through the exhibition at your own pace.

· Karl Zerbe, “Encaustic” screening (Monday, Oct. 8, 10am, GHA 137) Join us to watch the short, 1957 film made by the German-American artist Zarl Zerbe. Followed by a discussion.

· Dance/Art Collaboration (Sunday, Oct. 28th, 2–3pm in Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center, Room 137) A collaborative production between students of Meredith College’s Dance program and the Weems Gallery will infuse the gallery space with living art.

Natural Settings: Botanical Art by Susan Aldworth, Marilyn Bass, Claire Miller and Patricia Savage

These four artists explore the world of plants from different perspectives, in different styles and in media including pen and ink, colored pencil, watercolor, oils, pastels and cut paper.

A number of projects whose intent is to envision place while also envisioning the compromised devices of seeing place are presented in this show. They range from single-channel video work to more complicated works employing custom software and hardware. One piece will involve students in creating an experiential map.

Visual Voices:
The Language of Typography

This group exhibition explores the power of typography as discourse, as a means of communicating visual and verbal messages that speak to the imagination and beauty of typographic form, and, when combined into words, can instantly convey context and clarify intent.

A collaboration between the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and Student Action with Farmworkers,It pairs photographs with collected stories about the experiences of Latino farmworker fami-lies in the Carolinas and their dreams for the future. Presented in conjunction with the Meredith College Summer Reading Program.

A collaborative multi-media installation by Emily Cash Wilmoth ‘01, Catherine Thornton,
Emily Howard ‘01 and Kelly Smith-Campbell, Rhyme in Time explores female stereotypes and myths found in nursery rhymes. Women’s roles, hidden content and historical refer-ences found in seemingly innocent children's verses are exposed and reinterpreted.

16 artists from across the U.S. present functional and sculptural objects made from hand dug local clay and fired in wood burning kilns. The variety of artistic visions is great, the touch of the hand to a natural resource is a marvel in today’s high tech world.

Miss Ida's Legacy

Pick up an exhibition guide and take a journey into the life of Miss Ida Isabella Poteat, first chair of the Art Department. This dedicated teacher, mentor, and artist's legacy is shown through decades of work done by her and the students she called her "dear girls." Read an amazing account of her life and work by Art Professor Emerita, Blue Greenberg.
