Admissions Tips for High School Seniors (12/12)

The holidays bring a break from school that provides a good time for high school students to make progress in their college searches. The Meredith College Office of Admissions offers the following tips for high school seniors on making the most of this opportunity:

1. Complete your college admissions applications and submit them in advance of the published deadline. Submitting complete applications well ahead of the deadline means your schools of choice are allotted more time to process your application and supporting credentials before the flood of mail arrives around the deadline date.

And, if you are applying to schools with rolling admissions, the earlier you apply, the earlier you receive your decision! Still missing something for Meredith? Find it here.

2. Search and apply for scholarships. Meredith’s scholarship deadline is January 15. Click here to see a complete listing of the College’s scholarships as well as many outside scholarship opportunities. Websites like www.cfnc.organd www.fastweb.com are also great resources for outside scholarship searches.

3. Still haven’t sent your SAT and/or ACT scores to Meredith?Contact the College Board to request them. Visit www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/scores.htmlfor more information.

4. Have you visited each of the schools to which you are applying? If not, pull out the calendar and find a date that works for you and your family. Don’t forget Meredith College’s last Senior Visitation Day is January 28! Register here if you’d like to attend.

5. If you have been admitted Early Decision to a college or university, or have made your final decision to attend a particular school, withdraw any active or incomplete applications you have at other colleges. You won’t hurt any feelings; admissions offices will appreciate your honesty and respect for their staff time.

6. Get your tax information from 2012 together so you can apply for financial assistance. The 2013-14 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form will be available on January 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

7. Is your spring semester senior year course load challenging enough? Don’t be afraid to tackle some honors and AP classes as you prepare for the rigors of a college curriculum.

Admissions Tips for High School Juniors (12/12)

The holidays bring a break from school that provides a good time for high school students to make progress in their college searches. The Meredith College Office of Admissions offers the following tips for high school juniors on making the most of this opportunity:

1. Make an appointment with your college counselor to build a list of colleges you should consider. Already have a list? Sit down with your counselor to narrow that list so you can plan visits over spring or summer break.

2. Research the colleges you will visit. Do they require you to make an appointment to take a tour and attend an information session? Do they have any upcoming open house dates? Meredith’s Junior Visitation Days are on February 16 or April 13 and we hope to see you there. Register for your visit online after January 1.

3. Find the right fit for you! Take a college selection assessment at www.cfnc.orgor collegeboard.com. Also, make plans to attend a college fair near you in the spring. Check out www.nacacnet.orgto see if a national college fair will be held in your area.

4. It’s not too early to start your scholarship search! Check out www.fastweb.comand www.cfnc.orgto learn about the variety of outside awards available to college bound students.

5. Have you signed up for the SAT? Do so at www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/reg.html. More interested in the ACT? Register here.

6. Think about what classes to take in your senior year. For most colleges, the most important aspect of your application will be the rigor of your curriculum and the grades you have earned in those courses. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself!

7.Plan your summer. Look for summer programs that match your interests. Experiences like these are a great addition to any college application.

Congratulations to the Meredith College Class of 2012! (5/10)

On Sunday, May 6, 2012, Meredith College held commencement exercises in historic McIver Amphitheater. This was the first commencement for President Jo Allen, ’80, since her return to Meredith to serve as the College’s first alumna president.

The sea of maroon caps and gowns clustered in the center of the Amphitheater was striking, and was new this year. The undergraduate Class of 2012 voted to wear maroon regalia as a way of expressing their pride in Meredith’s heritage and distinguish themselves from other colleges in the area. Maroon is Meredith’s school color.

Alumna Silda Wall Spitzer, ’80, delivered the 2012 commencement address. Spitzer, former First Lady of the State of New York, has had a highly successful career spanning the private, non-profit and public sectors. She has worked to advance the economy, sustainability, youth service and education, and women’s leadership and human rights.

New graduates of Meredith look forward to a bright future, with jobs, volunteer work and graduate study on the horizon. They have good reason to be optimistic. A survey of Meredith graduates of the Class of 2011 found that 90.3 percent were either employed or attending graduate school within nine months of graduation. Below are videos of some of our new graduates, as they reflect on their experiences at Meredith and their future after Meredith.
