Note Taking

Listening and Note Taking
Prepare for class and actively take notes, and engage
with the material. Use the 5 Rs of note-taking.
Use two columns to:

  • Record: meaningful facts and ideas in right column
  • Reduce: summarize facts and ideas concisely in left column
  • Recite: using notes from the left column, paraphrase aloud in your own words
  • Reflect: put ideas in categories, form opinions, make connections, rearrange information
  • Review: spend a short time reviewing thesenotes to put the knowledge to use

(Academic Skills Center, Dartmouth College, 2001.)

Reading and Concentration
Use the SQR3 method to improve concentration
and memory:

  • Survey: Read headings, subheadings and notice charts, graphics, italicized or bold terms
  • Question: Turn each boldface heading into a question
  • Read: Actively search for answers as you read
  • Recall: At the end of each section, recall your questions and answer them
  • Review: Go back over your questions to see if you can answer them

Taking Ownership
Take ownership of your own teaching/learning process. Move beyond note taking to consider your own opinions and nvestigate areas that bring personal meaning to the subject.
