Interviewing

Interviewing is necessary in landing the job! Being aware of the multiple types of interviews and many styles of interviewing will help you feel more confident in these situations:

  • Screening interviews
  • Telephone interviews
  • One-on-one interviews
  • Group interviews
  • Panel interviews
  • Interviews over a meal
  • Behavioral Based interviews
  • Situational Case interviews
  • Informational interviews

Here are tips to adopt when facing any interview situation:

Prepare

  • Know yourself and how to communicate your experiences and skills
  • Know the employer
  • Anticipate & plan for questions you will be asked and will want to ask
  • Practice aloud
  • Dress the part

Communicate

  • Establish rapport and be open and engaged
  • Use active listening skills
  • Think about the interview as a conversation – a give and take and take time to respond if needed
  • Ask thoughtful and researched questions
  • “Close” the interview stating your interest in the position and your qualifications
  • Ask about next steps and follow up

Follow up

  • Write a thank you note within 24 hours
  • Complete any follow up mentioned by the employer
  • Reflect upon the interview, the experience, who you met, the position, the organization, and the fit
