Academic Advising Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities of the Student
- Give thoughtful consideration to your personal, academic, and professional goals.
- Discuss with your advisor personal long-range goals and the kind of job opportunities in which you may be interested after completing your degree.
- Know the basic requirements of your chosen major well enough to be able to ask meaningful questions (information found through the College Catalogue, and from specific academic departments).
- Plan ahead for meetings with your faculty advisor.
- Accept responsibility for making final decisions on academic matters.
- Become familiar with the College Catalogue and the course schedule for the current semester.
- Keep the advisor informed of all changes in your schedule, problems encountered and questions that could affect your academic life (such as possible change of major, study skills concerns, etc.).
- Visit your advisor promptly if you receive any low grades.
- Keep personal copies of grade reports, requirement sheets, and other important planning documents.
- Seek out-of-class activities (i.e., cultural events, interest-related clubs, student organizations, convocations, etc.) relevant to your desired major and other interests.
Primary Responsibilities of the Faculty Advisor
- Assist students in their consideration and clarification of educational goals.
- Assist students in developing a plan of study consistent with their goals and objectives.
- Provide accurate information to students and be appropriately available for discussions.
- Possess knowledge of programs, resources, policies,
and procedures.
- Provide timely attention to academic advising matters.
- Assist students in evaluation and re-evaluation of progress toward established goals and educational plans.
- Make referrals to resources within and outside of the college as appropriate.
- Expect the advisee to assume her share of the responsibility for the advising relationship and encourage her to do so.
Primary Responsibilities of the Student Advisor
- Provide a mentor relationship to first-year students upon their arrival at Meredith.
- Share how to be a good student at Meredith (the Honor Code, student life, Meredith’s traditions, academic life, social and recreational life).
- Support first-year students in developing effective study habits and academic planning.
- Refer students who may be in need of additional support to campus resources.
- Assist the faculty advisor in providing support and information to first-year students.
- Assist new students in getting to know each other.
Primary Responsibilities of Academic & Career Planning
- Assign faculty advisors to incoming first year students and support them during the year.
- Work with students experiencing academic difficulty.
- Provide study skills workshops on specific topics.
- Provide individual counseling/coaching on academic concerns, major selection, goal setting, time management, job search topics.
