Science courses are housed in the Science and Mathematics Building (SMB), which contains 80,000 square feet learning space, including 13 dedicated research labs that support the needs of ongoing student and faculty research.
Students have the unique opportunity to engage in a range of scientific research as undergraduates at Meredith. Whether their interest lies in biology, chemistry, astronomy, or physics, one of the research labs in the SMB will aid their studies. All labs are outfitted with standard safety equipment.
Analytical Balance Room: The room is equipped with eight Mettler AB104 Analytical Balances on vibration-free desks.
Analytical & Physical Chemistry: This suite contains a laboratory outfitted to accommodate 24 students, an analytical balance room and the Instrumentation Lab which houses instruments used for the Quantitative Chemical Analysis and the Physical Chemistry Courses. The lab contains individual benches space and enough hoods for two people/hood. The lab is also outfitted with computers so that students can analyze data, ovens, analytical glassware and small equipment such as ThermoSpectronic GENESYS 20 Spectrophotometer, Tel-X-Ometer 580M X-Ray system and Parr Solution Calorimeter used in the laboratory experiments.
Anatomy & Physiology Lab: This lab has research stations equipped with snorkel fume hoods, which allows for independent dissection of preserved specimens. The lab also contains computerized physiological hardware for data analysis.
Environmental Botany: This lab has space to accommodate long-term experiments, rather than experiments that have to be taken down the same day they are set up.
General Chemistry: This teaching lab has a lab benches equipped with snorkel fume hoods, which provide a safe environment for students to perform chemical experiments. The lab is also outfitted with four large hoods for more volatile chemicals, balances, pH meters, hot plates and large sinks for cleanup. The lab has a ceiling projector for pre-lab discussions and an attached prep lab.

Inorganic Chemistry: This teaching lab has a lab desk equipped with snorkel fume hoods, which provide a safe environment for students to perform chemical experiments. Instrumentation: This lab contains Cary 50 UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, spectrometers, Perkin-Elmer Lambda EZ201 UV/VIS spectrometer, a Shimadzu VP Series High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) with Photodiode Array Detector, Cary Eclipse Fluorescence Spectrophotometer, GOW-MAC 580 Gas Chromatograph with TCD, HP 5890 Gas Chromatograph/FID, Delta Nu Advantage 200A Raman spectrometer, a Agilent 6850/5973N Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer, ThermoNicolet IR100 FTIR spectrometer, Buck Model 500 IR spectrophotometer, PURELAB Plus Water Purification System and a BASi Epsilon Electrochemistry workstation that is used in the Quantitative Chemical Analysis and Physical Chemistry courses.
Microscopy Suite: This suite contains a scanning electron microscope and other advanced light microscopes that benefit microbiology students, as well as students in chemistry, interior design, nutrition, physics, and geology courses.
Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry Labs: This space is outfitted to accommodate the study of the properties and manipulations of DNA, RNA and proteins, especially as they relate to the Human Genome Project, bioinformatics, animal and plant cloning, and other emerging technologies. Other features include standing height benches, a biosafety cabinet that allows for the safe handling of Class II microbes, and a prep room.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: This room contains a 300 MHz Varian Mercury Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectrometer. Students that take Organic Chemistry (II) Lab, Instrumentation Analysis course and work with faculty on research projects in the department use the NMR.
Organic Chemistry: The lab is outfitted with 12 large hoods to accommodate the students working with organic compounds. The room also contains lab desk where students record results in a notebook and white boards for one-on-one teaching. Other features include balances, safety cabinets for storage of Organic compounds, organic waste containers for safe handling of organic compounds and standard organic lab equipment.
Physics: This room is designed to accommodate physics classes and physics lab activities. Lab equipment in the room includes electronic recording sensors for motion, force, temperature, electric current and voltage, light intensity, periodic motion, and sound analysis equipment.
Dual Engineering student Christina Churchill walks us through her typical day as a student enrolled in the Dual Engineering program, a partnership Meredith College has with NC State University.
Wamunyu earned degrees in mathematics and civil engineering through Meredith's engineering dual degree partnership with NC State. As a student at Meredith, Wamunyu's enriching experiences included meeting Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai. After graduation, Wamunyu will pursue a master's degree in city planning at the University of California, Berkeley.
