Family & Consumer Sciences / Program of Study

Students in the family and consumer sciences program explore the historical and theoretical perspectives and current trends in various disciplines, and acquire a solid foundation to apply human systems theory and life course development to their chosen area of specialization—child development, fashion merchandising and design, food and nutrition or interior design. With an emphasis on family life management skills, students gain the knowledge, skills and practice to empower individuals, strengthen families, and enable communities through teaching, research, and service.

Major in Family and Consumer Sciences
Students majoring in family and consumer sciences are required to complete 37 credit hours of family and consumer sciences, childhood development, economics and elective courses. Students combining the requirements for the FCS major with those for secondary licensure are required to earn additional course credit.

Minor in Family and Consumer Sciences
A minor in family and consumer sciences requires students complete 21 credit hours family and consumer sciences, child development and elective courses.
