The family and consumer sciences major is designed for students who want to enter careers that improve the lives of families and individuals. You will gain broad knowledge of all family and consumer sciences areas, which include child development, fashion merchandising and design, food and nutrition, and interior design.

Licensure Information

Family and Consumer Sciences majors prepare to work as Cooperative Extension Service agents, teachers, event planners, and for careers in consumer services, product and equipment promotion, and government programs. During the junior or senior year, students explore various career opportunities and have a supervised internship.


All students in our program are required to complete a supervised internship. Students who seek licensure have internships with the Wake County Public Schools. FCS majors who seek a major without licensure have completed internships with:

  • North Carolina Cooperative Extension
  •, a new media solutions provider
  • Communities in Schools of Wake County
  • Center for Aging at Duke University Medical Center

History of Success

The Family and Consumer Sciences program has a 100-year history at Meredith. The program that is now FCS began in 1914, and hundreds of alumnae have since gone on to successful lives of service to the field and their communities.
