Teacher education is a vital part of Meredith College. The members of Meredith's Department of Education embrace the College's goal to educate students for success and to prepare them for service in the wider community.
The conceptual framework of the teacher preparation program embodies the mission of the College and of the Department of Education. It embraces evolving professional standards, including the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards, and the participation of the public school community in teacher education.
Teacher Education Curriculum
Meredith College requires a program of general education that assures that all teachers will be literate, broadly educated and able to meet the needs of all students in an era of racial, ethnic, linguistic and technological change. Using that philosophy as a model, Meredith College students do not major in education, but complete a liberal arts major in the field of their choice. Completion of the teacher education program, taken in addition to the major, leads to a North Carolina teaching license.
Meredith’s renowned education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, which has changed its name to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). CAEP advances excellence in educator education through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality and supports continuous improvement to strengthen P-12 student learning.
