Sociology / Research
Research is an important element of sociology curriculum. All students are required to explore the logic of scientific inquiry from a social science perspective in SOC-374 Social Research Principles and complete a major research project that involves an internship or significant involvement in the community combined with research in sociology for SOC-496 Applied Research. With approval, students may also enroll in SOC-499 Research in Sociology and develop and carry out an independent research project of their own design under the supervision of a sociology faculty member.
Student research has focused on a variety of topics over the years, including food inequality, gender and police work, body image and disability, race and police work and websites and presentation of self. Students often present their research at Celebration of Student Achievement and the Southern Sociological Society’s Annual Meeting.
