The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures Travel Award (DFLLTA) is a grant made annually to one or more outstanding foreign language majors/minors at Meredith College. The award defrays recipients’ travel expenses to and from a program of language study abroad.

The DFLLTA applicant must:

  • Be a foreign language major/minor in Spanish OR be a minor in French or Italian;
  • State her intention to use the award for the purpose of pursuing language study abroad
  • Have completed at least one third-year course in her foreign language major/minor
  • Have a GPA of 2.75 or better

Application Procedures
The completed application includes the DFLLTA application form, transcript, essay, and at least two (2) letters of recommendation from college professors outside the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures. If she desires, the applicant may also submit a letter from a third, off-campus reference of her choice.

The letters of reference and the applicant’s essay must be written in English. The essay must provide specifics of the program of language study selected by the applicant (see other side for details).

All materials must be submitted to Dr. Astrid Billat by Monday, March 17 at 5:00pm.

The DFLLTA Committee
A committee reviews applications and conduct interviews with the DFLLTA applicants. The DFLLTA Committee is composed of three (3) professors representing the department’s major languages and at times a fourth Meredith professor from another discipline. The head of the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures chairs and appoints the committee, striving to rotate its membership each academic year. Committee members make all decisions pertaining to the award or awards to be given during the academic year. All committee members vote.

Evaluation of Applicants
In addition to the eligibility requirements listed above, other criteria include the following:

  • Applicant’s academic record in the department and in other disciplines
  • Quality of the applicant’s essay
  • Equal access by all foreign language majors
  • Interviews

Upon reviewing applicants, the DFLLTA Committee may conduct an interview in English with each applicant.

Notification of Award
The award recipient is announced at the annual departmental awards ceremony held during the second week of April.
