How to Calculate your Grade Point Average

Your grade point average, or GPA, is the average of your end-of-the-term grades. Using the method explained below, you may determine your GPA for one term, or calculate your cumulative GPA.

Step one to calculate GPA: Determine the student’s number of quality points by multiplying the number of credit hours for each course by the numerical value of the associated grade.

Step two: Divide the total number of credit hours into the total number of quality points to determine GPA.

Numerical value of letter grades:
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0

Sample student grades for a semester:
C – 3-hour English course
B – 3-hour history course
A – 4-hour biology course

Step one for sample student grades:
English course – 3 hours x 2 (for the C grade) = 6 quality points
History course – 3 hours x 3 (for the B grade) = 9 quality points
Biology course – 4 hours x 4 (for the A grade) = 16 quality points
Total credit hours = 10
Total quality points = 31

Step two for sample student grades:
Divide 10 credit hours into 31 quality points. Result: 3.1, which is the sample student’s GPA for the semester.
