Why do women chose the 23+ Program?
The needs of adult students often differ from those of traditional-age undergraduates. The 23+ Program offers women a supportive environment in which to begin or complete their education. 23+ Program academic advisors work one-on-one with students to establish goals and set class schedules. The program also sponsors orientation sessions at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters that are designed for adult learners.
I have been out of school for a long time. Can I really do this?
Yes, you can do this! The 23+ Program academic advisors recommend that students who have been out of school more than a year enroll in a limited number of classes during their first semester. The 23+ Program advisors will work with you to plan a schedule in conjunction with your life and your responsibilities.
How can I afford to return to school?
How can you afford NOT to return to school? Attaining an education is the most important thing a woman can do for herself and her family. Contact the Financial Aid Office at Meredith to acquire the appropriate forms to apply for financial aid. The process is free.
What is the average age of students enrolled in the 23+ Program?
Current students range in age from 23 to 64. The average age of current students is 36.
How long will it take me to earn a bachelor's degree?
It depends on how many hours you take in a given semester. You may acquire your degree more quickly if you attend summer school. Generally, you can complete it in 4 years if you take about 15 hours a semester.
What type of support is available for adult learners?
The 23+ Program advisors form close relationships with the adult learners they assist. They help students plan and pursue their academic goals. The advisors offer study skills sessions and organize special events for 23+ students. In addition, the 23+ Program sponsors a student organization, WINGS (Women In New Goal Settings).
Will I be able to earn my degree solely in the evening?
Students may attain a bachelor's degree in social work through evening courses. The school of business offers many courses needed for a degree in business administration at night. In addition, 23+ students may complete General Education requirements in the evenings over the course of four years. Other majors require students to attend day and evening classes.
I did not take algebra in high school and I do not like math. May I still earn a degree?
You must take non-credit Algebra I and Algebra II at either Meredith or a community college to earn a degree. The 23+ Program offers an algebra class for its students.
Is the 23+ Program a remedial program?
No. Some 23+ students complete "refresher" or developmental coursework because they have not been enrolled in a school for several years. However, the majority of 23+ students take college degree classes during their first semester.
Does the 23+ Academic Advising office have evening hours?
Although the advisors do not have formal evening office hours, they work with individual 23+ Program enrolled students to schedule evening hours.
How will I learn how to study again?
The 23+ office offers study skills sessions at the beginning of each semester. Advisors help students develop their test-taking skills, note-taking skills and time management tactics. Contact the 23+ Program Academic Advising office for more information at (919) 760-2366.
When do I register for classes?
For fall semester pre-registration, students receive notification in February to set up appointments with their advisors in March. Conferences are held in March and pre-registration begins in late April.
For spring semester pre-registration, students receive notification in September to schedule an appointment with their advisors. Conferences are held in mid-October and pre-registration begins in November.
Do 23+ Program students participate in the laptop program at Meredith?
Full-time students participate in the program, part of the Meredith Technology Initiative. Part-time students are not required to participate in the program, however laptops are available for check-out at Carlyle Campbell Library.
