Special Information for Adult Students Age 23 and Older
About the Program
The Meredith College Undergraduate Degree Program for Adult Women Age 23 and over provides an avenue for women to begin or continue their college education. The mission of the Program is to assist women ages 23 and older in identifying their educational goals and in developing plans for meeting these goals through the Meredith College undergraduate program. The Program was established in 1972 with only five students. Approximately 20 percent of the student body at Meredith is over the age of 23. For more information you may attend an information session or contact the Meredith College Office of Admissions.
Women decide to begin or complete their education for a variety of reasons, including:
- To improve self-esteem and fulfill a dream
- To build upon previous college credit
- To change careers
- To improve employability or to earn a promotion
- To attain a second degree or a second major
What It Means to be a Non-Traditional Student
An essay by Cynthia McDaniel
“I wanted to be an example for other women that were contemplating whether or not they should go back to school and to say it is never too late to make a change in life by obtaining a bachelor’s degree.”
An essay by Nikki P. Hicks
“Although the path of a non-traditional student is demanding, the pride, self-worth, dignity and respect gained are worth the journey. I will forever be proud of my accomplishments and treasure this experience for life.”

Academic Advising
The Program serves women who balance many roles in their lives- wife, mother, employee, and caretaker. To help 23+ students succeed academically, Meredith offers academic advising services designed especially for them. The advisors work one-on-one with adult women to help them attain a college degree.
After students complete the application process, their academic records are sent to the 23+ Academic Advising office. The office contacts each new student to schedule a conference. During the conference, the advisor and the new student will discuss:
- Program letters and required classes
- Transfer credit evaluation results (i.e., coursework from other institutions that will transfer to Meredith)
- General education requirements
- Requirements for the student's chosen major
- The student's schedule for the upcoming semester
- Available support services on campus
- Immunization forms, parking information and orientation materials
The academic advisor will be the student's advisor until she declares her major.
