Meredith Abroad in Spain - Summer 2010
LOCATION
Santiago de Compostela is a small, wonderful city in the northwest of Spain, combining a rich historical heritage with a lively university life. Santiago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the final destination of the legendary medieval Camino de Santiago (Pilgrim’s Way). As a medieval center of cultural, artistic, and commercial exchange, Santiago has preserved for centuries its rich legacy in its churches and architecture, in its streets and squares, and even in its lifestyle. You will enjoy Santiago’s open-air markets, outdoor cafes and restaurants, beautiful parks, and the famous university campus.

COURSES
Students will enroll in 3 courses while in Santiago, receiving a total of 8 credits.
· SPA 207: Intermediate Conversation (3 credits) OR SPA 307: Advanced Conversation (3 credits)
· SPA 302: Topics in Language and Culture (3 credits)
· SPA 350: Spanish Seminar (2 credits)
Successful completion of the study abroad program fulfills the CORE 200 or Global Perspectives requirement for General Education.
You and students from around the world will enroll directly in Spanish language courses at the University of Santiago. Based on a placement test at the beginning of the program, you will be placed into either beginning, intermediate, or advanced language courses.
In the beginning and intermediate language courses, hands-on language learning techniques are used through workshops about life in Spain, taking place at various cultural settings. This approach enables students to function not only in the classroom but also in everyday life. More advanced students will take Spanish language instruction and seminars related to socio-economic and political life in Spain as well as in art and folklore.

PROGRAM COST:
$6200 - includes tuition, fees, room, most meals, program-related excursions
ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:
Airfare (estimated at $1,550), passport ($125), books ($100), insurance ($70), and cell phone ($50)
Miscellaneous spending in Spain should average about $1,600 (range $1,400-$2,000) and cover independent travel, 1 meal per day, recreation, etc.

LODGING:
While in Santiago students will live with local families.
PROGRAM FEATURES:
The program begins with an introduction to Spain’s capital city, Madrid. While there, students will visit museums and historical landmarks while adjusting to using Spanish and learning about local customs and traditions. After this introduction, students will travel as a group to Santiago where they will begin their classes.
While in Santiago, a two-day excursion on the “Road to Santiago” will give you an opportunity to explore the path that Christian pilgrims have taken since the eleventh century. You will admire the harmony of the Romanesque art and architecture, or simply have the pleasure of taking in the landscape.
You will also visit Pontevedra, a city with a long maritime and trading tradition that boasts one of the largest and most elegant historic quarters in the whole of Galicia. Pontevedra extends in a network of streets and squares and contains major civic and religious buildings.
Dr. Thomas and Dr. Hunt will remain with you in Santiago until June 16. After that, the staff of the Universidad de Santiago will provide support and assistance. Students will return to the US independently.

Students must be in good academic standing (2.0 minimum GPA)
